Whump, whump, whump. The steady rhythm of the windmill's blades is all you hear. From the hilltop, they’ve turned like this for centuries, a soothing, almost hypnotic sound. Outside, the soft hum is calming, like the world's own lullaby. But inside, the air changes. The gears grind, louder, sharper, filling the space with a harsh, mechanical scream. It feels alive in here—dangerous. As the mundane threat of the machine fades, something far more horrific waits. Over the grinding and the endless whump, whump, whump, the shadows stir. They don’t need to be silent. Not in a place like this.
Perched proudly atop a hill, this stone windmill is an iconic landmark in the town’s skyline. With multiple entry points, players can decide how they want to explore—each path holding its own potential for adventure.
At the top, the grinding, creaking mechanisms groan with every gust of wind turning the blades. Watch your step—one misstep here could lead to a nasty fall! The narrow, spiraling wooden stairs creak beneath your feet as you descend, with no railings to save you if the height starts to feel too real. The measurements seem more like suggestions, making every step an adventure for those wary of heights!
On the ground level, time hasn’t been kind. Dusty crates and cobwebs dominate the space, and the floorboards creak ominously with every step. In places, the wood gives way, revealing glimpses of the basement below—one misstep and you might be dangling through the floor!
But the basement? It’s surprisingly well-kept. No cobwebs here, only a warm fire flickering in the hearth and the mill’s massive grinding stone, waiting to crush anything tossed under its weight. There’s more to this basement than meets the eye!
Alternative location for the Old Bonegrinder windmill in Curse of Strahd.
This windmill was once a vital part of the town, a place every local knew well. Its towering presence and history are woven into the fabric of the community.
You can decide if it’s a windy day, with the blades turning and the gears grinding, or a calm day when everything is still. It’s definitely safer when the wind isn’t howling!
The stairs inside feel like an afterthought—poorly made and haphazard in design. It’s surprising for such a sturdy stone structure to have such rickety, questionable interior access.
The ground floor shows signs of neglect—dusty cobwebs stretch across the room, hinting at long periods of disuse. Boxes and barrels litter the space. Some may hold useful items, while others are likely just discarded after their purpose was served.
The basement, however, is a different story. Accessible only through the cellar doors outside, this space is clearly well-maintained. A fire crackles in the hearth, casting a warm glow, and bags of wheat line the walls, waiting to be ground. It’s much more inviting—and suspiciously well-kept—compared to the rest of the windmill. The cages against the wall don’t help the feeling of unease.
