We're seeing it from Jojo's perspective, and kids don't understand things the same way as adults. He sees war as something cool that he wants to participate in, and all of the deleterious fallout of war is kinda buried under his homelife and his imagination. But the war is still happening even when he doesn't see it, so it encroaches more and more until it shatters his idealistic view completely. Even the color palette changes as the film progresses, as we literally see more and more of the real world. Nobody is able to witness the shoe reveal and maintain their composure. Nobody. Taika Waititi is probably the only filmmaker still working who could have pulled this off. Mel Brooks might have been able to tackle it as well a few decades ago, but I can't think of anybody else who could have walked this tightrope and gotten it right.

2023-08-08 03:24:55 +0000 UTCI remember seeing this in theaters and that big reveal about two thirds through the movie hits you right in the guts. That's Taiki Waititi movies for you, funny and lighthearted then sad all of a sudden. Also towards the beginning of the movie when Jojo's mom says "look after my boy," to Captain K, he actually does do that the rest of the movie.
