I'm so psyched you decided to finally give buffy a shot! I hope you really enjoy it. I do have a recommendation, if you think you're going in for the long-haul: the version you're using looks to be the remastered version which has a ton of issues. I'd say it's definitely worth looking into getting the original DVD quality SD versions. Yes, the remaster is *that* bad. I think Amazon Video has the SD version for sale, but it might be kind of costly.

Buffy has super human strength, more so then most vampires, and fast healing. She can take a beating but recovers very well. Personally I would put her around Jessica Jones as portrayed on Netflix, maybe not quite as strong.
I think the lore is that as the Slayer the most significant supernatural events are either drawn to her, or she is drawn to them. But the Buffyverse is obviously much more expanded then what we see in this episode, or even the first several seasons.
The first season is rough, but if you make it to season 2, it becomes one of the best shows in television history, making it easily into the top 20 and personally in my top 3.
