My understanding of basic assistance in the expanse is that unemployed people get cheap paper clothing, cheap crappy housing, and rice and protein food, and simple medical care. Basically what you need to survive but that's it. Basic assistance does not include payments from the government in the expanse so there's really no way for people on basic to actually improve their lives or get off basic.

Unless you're the best of the best, or mainly connected in some way, you're likely to live a meaningless unfulfilling life. There are those in the fringes, some unregistered people who make up the criminal underworld (personally i would do both.. why not take the basic and then go criming on the side?). so it's just like Earth now lmao (jk)
