We kick off this new drama with both our leads as young children. Deok-Im is a young maid with a free spirit and a knack for making money. She's ordered to pay respects to a late royal concubine and there she meets the Crown Prince who also secretly came to say goodbye to his grandmother. Without knowing he's the prince, she goes on about her time and eventually is told of a forbidden book which King Yeongjo despises because of a certain phrase. Accidentally stumbling across a secret conversation, she over hears that the Crown Prince is keeping said book in his library and is about to get in trouble. She runs off to save the day without getting any of the credit for it. Meanwhile, Crown Prince San, attempts to search for the young girl he met paying respects to his grandmother until his mother tells him she has left. Fast forward to the two all grown up and Deok-Im had a chance run in with Prince San that leaves us excited for the next episode!

I cried so, so, so much when I watched this drama. Moreso as I'm Korean and this drama was quite historically accurate of one of our best kings in history. Most dramas depict Yi San only as a kind, considerate king, but he was also a strict, sensitive and lonely king full of pride which were qualities that had made him a good king. His life was full of tragedies. This drama really shows who he was. Historically accurate dramas are very rare. Characters here are all morally grey and are difficult to just judge as simply 'good' and 'evil' as they are products of their environment and status, so it makes them seem so real. However, despite how good of a show it is making many domestic viewers cry, I was very sad to see it wasn't well known overseas. Excited to watch it with you guys!!

I agree with Free that Court Lady Seo told the kids about the banned book and the context of it to protect the kids from making mistake. If I'm not mistaken, the knowledge that King Yeongjo's mother's origin is a servant is known to the public but the act of having or reading that book is considered disrespectful and traitorous to the king. So that's why the knowledge of it itself is not a crime but the act of having/reading the book or openly talking about the issue is considered a crime because it is disrespectful to the king. You have to know the rules to know what action you should or should not do. I think Deok Im got sick because of the extreme fear, nervousness and tension that she felt while she was hiding the banned book. While watching this for the first time, I also thought 'Why are you keeping that torn pages instead of burning it? That is soooo dangerous!' but I guess it keeps us concern for her and engaged in the story because we keep being worried for her.. Hehe..

Hi!! So excited for this. Not sure if you guys know the story of Crown Prince Sado(San's father) so I'm going to write a little of that because it is part of history and it was not really explained in this drama. It is said that Crown Prince Sado went insane and had hallucination + delusion due to all the pressure and expectation he felt being a crown prince. It was so bad that he started killing court ladies and eunuchs that served in his palace and even his favourite concubine at that time. People said that you can hear screaming coming from his palace because of this. The current king/San's grandfather (King Yeongjo) cannot order a direct execution of the crown prince because it would imply that the crown prince is a criminal and his family (wife and children) could also be implicated by it, but he also cannot let Crown prince Sado to continue the killing of innocent people. San's grandmother (the royal concubine Yeong) also adviced the king to kill crown prince Sado and pleaded that the crown prince's wife and child should not be harmed. So King Yeongjo resorted to order crown prince Sado to be locked inside a rice chest and banned anyone from giving water or food to the crown prince. It took 7 days for the crown prince to die in the rice chest due to starvation and heat. King Yeongjo later made San adopted by his uncle so that the ties between San and Crown prince Sado is broken and San will officially be known as his uncle's son instead. This was done to protect San and avoid opposition to San's accession to the crown prince status as Crown prince Sado is known as sinner. This is the recorded history but there are speculation that Crown Prince Sado's illness is actually a slander by the party that oppose Crown prince Sado's reign. So I think the history is correct but we might never know if it is actually true. The story of King Yeongjo's father (King Sukjong) is also very interesting because the Queen at that time (Queen Inhyeon) is very famous in history for being virtuous and also known for her fight with Royal Concubine Jang Hui Bin (also known as the worst and most evil concubine in Korean history). Crown Prince Sado was actually raised in the palace that Jang Hui Bin used to stayed in and people said that the evil energy in that palace might be the reason of how he turned out to be. But I would say that the fault actually lies in the court ladies that brought up the crown prince but it is an interesting coincidence. I love watching another k-drama called 'Dong Yi' where the main female lead is the mother of King Yeongjo and it tells the story from when she was a servant in the palace until she became the royal concubine of the highest rank.
