It's one of the first things asked because it is how one is addressed, served, the etiquette, everything. There is a strict hierarchy based on age/seniority. The friend with the child is store manager of that particular store. The witchy woman is the General Manager over several stores that now is in charge of doubling the stores numbers, even though she really isn't there, besty is.
