Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung Ep. 2

We didn't think it would happen this soon, but here comes the water works already. Also, our inner book worms are ticked off, but oh how the drama is already starting to appear, that and an adorably cute and angry Eun Woo. XD

One good thing about my rewatching this is I can focus more on the acting. The first time I watched this, I was always trying to play catch up because there are so many twists and secrets and intrigues, which is typical of sageuks. The 2nd time, I was able to get more immersed and I actually cried more (that’s right Free, that was just a sampler. This drama will have plenty of that) because I was paying more attention to the faces and the expressions. The FL is so perfect for this role. She is pretty but in a non-frivolous way. Very cheeky, brave, too brave sometimes, logical, smart, loyal. Eunwoo is perfect for this as well. His character here is pure and innocent, but with depth. When he smiles, which he does often in this drama, he is pureness personified, like a ray of sunshine. But he carries a mountain of pain inside him, which for some could easily turn into bitterness and make the person act out, but he is still full of love and not closed off. I also did not realize until I rewatched this that his character is 6 years younger than the girl which makes their role reversal more understandable. As Free immediately caught in the preview, the next episode is one of the rare times we see Eunwoo shirtless. It will be a quick glimpse, but his muscles will be in display so don’t blink. Haha! Those broad shoulders that are so prominent when he’s wearing his robe are certified real. 👌🏻 now, if only those long flowing sleeves could be tightened and shortened a bit so we could appreciate his biceps 💪🤣

2 historians actually. The guy and one of the girl historians that was being teased as chubby in MIGB.

Oops 🤭 I just felt bad because Mer and Free were getting lost on how the royalties were related and didn’t think this was one of the big plot twists in the story. I’ll be more careful next time. 👍

@Lani I wouldn’t have mentioned this yet since this would be a spoiler for them

That's so funny, I didn't even realize! I DID recognize that one of the males historians was in MIIGB though!

So happy to be watching this again! I've been waiting for my friend to watch with me so I could rewatch it, but she keeps putting it off, so I was really excited when it won the poll. I've only seen this drama once, and I don't pick up on details well because my thoughts tend to wander while watching and I miss a lot. Rewatches for me are like watching a brand new drama sometimes because of that. So I won't have much to add, but I'm enjoying everyone's breakdowns in the comments!

The entire reason the Eunach pretended to be Mawah was to avoid the entire the King was unreasonably pissed off. The younger prince is in a guilded cage and not allowed out of that corner of the palace. He was very bad sneaking out, which is why he wouldn't say who he was when captured. He also didn't have anything on him that denoted him as royalty, just that he was clearly noble with his mannerisms and the expense level of his clothing. His already brother clearly has affection and feels sorry for him but he also is in a cage of beuracracy. The King is a massive dick. Like with regular k-dramas, the more historical ones you watch, the more you will pick up on the dress codes. The tall black mesh hats with the brims and long chains are essentially noble men/head of household hats. The Second Councelior when at home had the fancy buiding looking hat. Essentially police or peace keepers have the lower mesh hats with the feathers on top. Different towns/factions have different feathers. In court they have both robs and the wings on the hats. For example; the historians are all in the green robes showing they are from the Office of Records. They have the brimless, tall hats. Some have the wings on the back that denote their 'position'. I believe the weirdly hanging belts have some specific decorations but not clear on that one. The Doweger Queen and other female royalty are recognized by the long hairpin at the nape of their neck. The fancier/bigger the decoration, the higher their position. This is the first one I watched and I really loved all the characters. The FL is so well done-spunky, independant, sometimes naive in her independent stubborness but not bitchy ever. The other female characters the become more prevalent are also well written for their roles. And soooooooo many dramatic grapefruit moments.

There’s interrelationships in these you would be surprise later in the episodes to know. But anyways i was hoping you both would recognize Columbus Park the scammer who took ImJugyeong’s Dad’s off his money in True Beauty. But he is such a good actor and his historical beard prob really hard to recognize him . Anyways Columbus Park the scammer in TB is the book storeowner here in Rookie historian 😂😂😂👍🫰Also male historians are scholars from the prestigious Sungkyunkwan university which is Eunwoo’s own university in current time he graduated major in performing arts . Such tidbits im so proud to know for Eunwoo 🫰

I like your reactions because you understood the intrigues well, The second Councillor wanted to have the woman historian to place a spy in the palace, at this time women are often used as spies because they can easily go anywhere in places forbidden to men, such as the Queen's palace. The second councillor was still fooled by the crown prince because he did not think that the prince was going to pass this exam, he thought easily put anyone as a spy. For the books that were burned, they banned everything because they want to ban the book of « ho dam »but also didn’t want that the people know what was this forbidden book,They banishing any book that mentions the palace , the people will know nothing about this famous book which they really fear, You know that the same thing happened in Germany at the time of Hitler in the second world war, he burned all the so-called "intellectual" books and bibles also I believe, he also ordered to decapitate the authors and the intellectuals of the country, fortunately they managed to flee before.

To add to this, the current king is not the biological son of the queen dowager. I only understood after I rewatched it as it’s something mentioned only once in a future dialog that is easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. If I’m not mistaken, the current king is an illegitimate son of the queen dowager’s husband.

Lani S

The older lady (who barely looks old and whose actress is in fact younger than the king) is the queen dowager, AKA the wife of a previous king. The flashback is revealing that her eldest son (who was king at the time) was overthrown/killed in a coup and the current king (who was Prince Hamyeong at the time) made her name him the successor. Now the second state councillor thinks she is the one who wrote The Story of Ho Dam, and he hopes to get a female historian into her chambers to spy on her and be able to report back that she is plotting treason against the king.
