Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung Ep. 1

We're diving into our new k-drama and already enjoying the dramatic grapefruits, book references, and Cha Eun Woo's smiles! This one was a great start with a strong female lead and an adorable male lead. Already there are so many twists and turns that have us guessing as to what will happen next. Can't wait to watch more! Thanks for this pick, K-Cordies!

Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung Ep. 1

Speaking of “sageuks” (Korean historical dramas), there are so many good ones, both traditional and fusion. I used to only watch them because of an actor/actress that I like. But I’ve come to realize after watching a few, that there are many great stories that can only be told in this setting. So I’ve learned to at least give it an episode or 2 before I DNF it. Hwarang, a fusion sageuk, is a good “lighter” watch than other traditional ones, if you’re just dipping your toes into sageuk. Just for the eye candy, it will be worth your while. But I actually like the coming of age type of story it has. Doesn’t hurt that Park Hyunsik is so dreamy here. This was before I discovered Eunwoo who has since permanently ruined me for any other actor. Btw, V is one of the hwarangs. I didn’t know anything about kpop at that time so the significance of his casting was lost on me. 🤣 Then there are epic sageuks like Mr. Sunshine that is so beautifully made that it leaves other dramas to shame, but definitely not for “light” watching. Really just depends on what you’re in the mood for.

I was having a TB withdrawal so i cld not even post my end of the TB drama feedback and went binge watched Rookie Historian & just finished to gladly re watched the first episode again with you last Saturday 😂. Eunwoo here just showcased his emotional depth in acting. This would just be his second male lead drama after MIIGB . Only a rookie actor himself but he is growing leaps and bounds with the portrayal of his naive, innocent lovable needs to be protected Prince Dowon character. I was not much of a historical drama myself but this one is less intense nd still has the rom com scenes that kept me hooked up and a bunch of grapefruits as we all would say now . Eunwoo in their historical attire is swoonworthy as well. Man is a true Prince . I would like to mention that Columbus Park of True Beauty is here in Rookie Historian and looks forward to Mer & Free discovering him. He’s already in episode 1 . So i will be anticipating if u will recognize him this time on episode 2.

True Beauty was my first k-drama, then I hopped around the Fairy Tale/Korean Legend dramas which lead me to the FL in Bride of Haebek. From there it led me to Rookie Historian and like everyone else, loved she is a spunky, smart, trying to be independant FL without being bitchy. It took me a bit to catch who Eunwoo was. He was familiar but it didn't click until he was writing at the palace. Then I got the flashes of him writing in True Beauty as a student and OMG. This character is so innocent and smilie compared to Suho. You really fall in love with all the characters; even the secondary and teriary ones. Sooo many dramatic grapefruits you get the entire produce bin of them! it's great. This series is one your cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing. The book is the key catalyst for the series. There are the historical social constructs that play a part but that book is the 'forbidden knowledge' item that moves the plot along other then the 2 leads. I am so glad you are reacting to this and it won. I don't think I have come across any reactors who have done this one.

Before True Beauty came out, this was my absolute Kdrama of Eunwoo’s. It has everything. It took me a few episodes in to pick up on character’s names but you’ll get there. I’ll look forward to the next episode with you all!

I agree about the translation not capturing the meaning, especially that older brother term which actually happened not just with Eunwoo, but also with the girl when she was drinking with her brother and she right away addressed him as “orabeoni” but here were Mer and Free wondering about their relationship for a few moments. With Viki, they actually sometimes write the original term and explain the meaning, because there’s really no way to translate it in English. Disclaimer: I’m not Korean but I studied it for a few months (definitely not an expert and have forgotten most of it). One thing I learned that was so interesting for me but a huge PITA is how they have different rules of conjugation depending on who you’re talking to. They have different conjugations not just for past, present, future but also depending on formality/politeness levels, which changes when you’re talking to someone more senior (level 1), same age but you don’t know very well (level 2), and someone you know very well (level 3). So that scene where they first meet and Eunwoo starts talking to Haeryung casually because technically, as a prince, he trumps her in social level, then he had to struggle to conjugate, hesitantly adding “yo” at the end which is the ending used for that 2nd level of formality, was freaking adorable. 😍

I am so happy you started this drama. The reason why I wanted you to start this drama because female lead is intelligent, independent woman and you can relate it. Even though it is of joeson era, the woman is progressive. Also, the male lead aka Cha Eunwoo is the most green flag. He is supportive and progressive and he may started as a naïve dude because of his upbringing & being locked in the palace since the day he was born but you will see him maturing, becoming his own man. Even I cannot watch historical drama but I enjoyed this one as its fusion. They cover so many issues, topics from female right to being your own person, religion, medicine what not. You will love it. Both leads are awesome and you will see. Jin, the dude who gave Prince Li Rim aka Cha Eunwoo permission to leave the palace was his older brother. It is the king who doesn't want him to leave and their is a reason for that. They only wanted to ban story of ho dam book as it contains things that king wants to hide but only banning them will be suspicious so they banned books that were translated from western novel and books written by civilians. They made an excuse that it will harm people. So, you see eunwoo book written by civilian so they banned that as well. It may look like a historical romcom on the surface but it is such a layered drama. BTW, the heroine was reading wuthering heights novel to those ladies ahahaha. Can't wait to see more. There are so many hilarious scene in this drama. He is hardcore romantic and she is logical girl so there is a scene when he will be all romantic and she will literally ruin it for him ahhahaha. Yes, she will become historian. There are 20 episodes not 10. Yi Rim is so different from Lee Suho. In TB, eunwoo's character was protecting everyone but here is such a cute goof ball whom you want to protect. He is a total sweetheart.

You have idea how excited I got when I saw this get posted!!! I love this drama because the FL is very independant, confident, and intelligent. Generally when I've watched other kdramas with a FL who is meant to have these characteristics, they make her into a complete bitch or a sociopath with no empathy. Maybe I just haven't watched the right ones, but this is the only drama where I actually feel like I connect with her on more than 1 level. She's my favorite FL! Since you have Haeryung's identity down, here's some main people to try and remember for now. I'll only list a few who we already met and will be important for the entire show. Eunwoo's character: Prince Yirim AKA Prince Dowon AKA Maehwa Eunwoo's guard: Sambo Eunwoo's older brother: Crown Prince Yi Jin Now one thing I hate about Netflix translations is that they completely remove honorifics. The translators for Viki will at least use them when needed or put an explanation of what the character means. I personally think if the character says "hyung" or something like that, then they should leave it. While you can translate it to the english "older brother" it doesn't really hold the same meaning and can take away the importance of a relationship. When Eunwoo and Sambo were leaving the palace grounds for the first time and they saw the Crown Prince coming, Eunwoo referred to him as "Hyung-nim" but the subtitles put "Jin." So, as people who understand Korean culture, if you saw that you would've known he was Eunwoo's older brother in a high position right there instead of making you go through multiple more scenes to figure it out on your own. I personally find it very frustrating. Oh, and uh... there's 20 episodes, not 10!

Glad you’re liking this drama! It may look like a romantic comedy but the context is a lot more serious. You gals are so observant and picking up on all these little hints. They have to ban the other books otherwise they will just make the people more curious about the Story of Hodam if that’s the only one they are banning. The whole point is to hide what’s in the book. I’m not going to spoil it but that book is very central to the story. Both our main leads are connected to it. You pronounce it as “goo” like something sticky. “hae” is with a short e like in “bed”, but add h in front. “Ryung” is like yawn but with an ng sound at the end and r in front. You connect the r sound with y. It’s not sounded out as a separate syllable. Not “ru-yawng”. Just all one syllable “ryawng”. If it’s hard to connect the r, just add it to the end of “hae” so it doesn’t trip you up. “Her yawng”. But keep it short e sound not like the “-ur” sound in the female possessive “her”.

This was so much fun! I'm so excited that someone's finally reacting to Rookie Historian, because it's probably my favorite Eunwoo drama and definitely one of the most underrated historical kdramas in my opinion. As for the book banning, I think the idea is that they're banning all these books under the guise of them being too crass or low-brow + being influenced by the West (hence Robinson Crusoe and Sorrows of Young Werther being included) but it's all to cover up the fact that they don't want anyone to read The Story of Ho Dam, as you noted.
