Chapter 5

Chapter 6 Hunting and Gathering Troubles

The Great Forest of Jura was a vast region filled with monsters and magical creatures. It was a powerful buffer between nations, travel through it was seen as dangerous both from the terrain and the dangerous magical creatures.

Veldora had long ago made a pact with Dryads offering the forest to be their home. In kind they became the guardians and care takers of the forest. Veldora’s presence made the forest “protected” as many didn’t want to disturb the forest and risk breaking Veldora’s seal and earn the wrath of the dragon. It also wasn’t wise to disturb the inhabitants of the forest or risk the Dryad’s wrath.

There were four main races that claimed the forest as it’s territory. The Ogres, the Lizardmen, the Direwolves, and the Goblins. When Veldora vanished things happened, there was a power vacuum.

Initially there was a balance between these tribes. The Ogres were very powerful physically and were adept at creating armor and weapons, with a good number capable of using magic.

The lizardmen had good numbers, were skilled in combat, having good agility and tactics. Their greatest asset was home field advantage, the swamps and marshes they made of their territory gave them an incredible advantage.

With the Direwolves they had great speed with natural weapons of fangs and claws, with their talent of pack tactics.

Lastly there were the goblins, they had numbers. Rigurd’s tribe was one of many scattered through the forest. Goblins were also gifted in adaptability, learning quickly how to use tools, weapons, and fighting techniques.

Each tribe had their strengths and weaknesses but under Veldora’s protection things remained peaceful.

Ranga’s father tried to take advantage of the situation and began attacking the goblin villages. His plan was to devour all the goblins, grow stronger and evolve while procreating and increasing their numbers. Had he moved from village to village, killing goblins, they could have evolved enough and gained power enough to take on the lizardmen, and after that they’d gain enough power to take on the ogres. Taking over the Forest of Jura, and commanding the magical beasts that lived here.

The whole mess ended badly for him.

Much like the mess in the cave, those that lived in Veldora’s forest were bombarded by the overflow of magicules. Living in this forest helped monsters grow and evolve quickly, as such magical beasts were able to absorb said magicules and potentially evolve into monsters. It’s because of this beings like demons, and spirits gauged a monster based on their ability and their potential, while humans and angels typically looked down on monsters as lowly beasts.

Rimuru didn’t realize it yet, but his presence was causing changes. Not only did he evolved a tribe of goblins and direwolves into Hobgoblins and Lunacentaurs, but united the two groups. It was likely a positive change compared to the other one…

-x-

For the village Rimuru had two big concerns on his mind. Food and Shelter. ‘Hmm shouldn’t clothes be a concern to...man I guess I really am an incubus.’ He eyed all the half naked hunks in the village. The rags the goblins had barely fit their new hobgoblin bodies. ‘So hot!’ He was surrounded by so many studs, a part of him didn’t want to lose the view. His dick throbbed.

Rigurd’s robe that once covered his whole body now barely a loincloth that covered his ass and manly bits. The fact he was now built like a body builder who could flex his pecs and back muscles better than Johnny Bravo was another matter. His son Rigur’s garment mostly covered the front, if he moved the garment shifted either showing ass or some of his dick and balls. Sometimes when he moved a certain way, his dick would sway and Rimuru’s gaze always seemed to track it catching dick slip peeks. With his little bandanna he was too fucking cute!

He’d already had a taste of this hobgoblin but he was already eager for more.

To say nothing of the Lunacentaurs who were wearing nothing at all...nothing at all...nothing at all! Their plump furry asses were just out on full display their heavy balls just dangling like ripe fruit. Ranga’s form was the most evolved, the sexiest of the pack from his plump fluffy pecs, his soft furry abs, to his general size that made Rimuru want to mount him and go horse back riding.

Clothing didn’t seem like a necessity to the incubus mind, but Rimuru felt they could use armor at some point. This world was clearly dangerous and if there was trouble fighting mostly naked probably wouldn’t go well. Little did he know the key to solving that problem was the little slime he adopted as a pet.

‘We’ll put a pin in that, we should focus on food and shelter.’ He crossed his arms. ‘But I know practically nothing about this world, what’s even edible around here?’ Having eaten only monsters and herbs he had no clue.

“Hey Rigurd, what did you do for food around here?”

Rigurd flexed his muscles before answering. “My late son ran the hunting party, we would hunt magical beasts for food. At the same time they would hunt us for the same thing.”

‘I guess that makes sense as I had quite the buffet in Veldora’s cave. I wonder why wild monsters attack like they do, what’s different.’

Great Sage: Notice: Monsters of intelligence or sentience can learn skills and gain abilities because of what constitutes as a soul, this soul is what quantifies a monster as a true monster, through mind, body, and spirit monsters are able to grow with either their magicules, the world’s, or their master’s. Wild monsters are known as magical beasts, they attack on instinct, seeking to devour the “soul” of humans and monsters in order to form their own, evolving into true monsters. By naming a magical beast you can help create the soul needed to grant sentience. When wild monsters are slain the magicules they build up over time are returned to the world allowing them to be reborn by the world’s magicules, when a monster or human with a soul dies their soul enters the cycle of reincarnation and their bodies return to the world.

‘Hmm, well not like I can just go around naming every monster I meet, I might throw the whole world out of balance, plus it’d mean more mouths to feed.’ He wasn’t out to disrupt anything, unaware of his actions already. ‘The monsters being born from the world’s magicules reminds me of respawns in rpg’s. So does that means the monsters I ate back in Veldora’s cave will also return in time?’

Great Sage: Answer: Correct! Magicules in any given area will remember the creatures that become touched by them. When it comes to intelligent monsters, upon death the soul will be lost, and if the body is in tact the magicules in the area could flow into it causing the body to become an undead without a proper burial.

‘Good tip…’ He sweatdropped. Even humans using monster parts and converting them into weapons served a purpose to the world.

Great Sage: Notice: Beware intelligent magical beasts may be a sign of evolution, but magical beasts who have eaten others to gain a soul, can have that soul darkened and can be dangerous or twisted. It can corrupt their evolution tree, tainting it with evil. Monsters with souls who devour others with souls can taint themselves the same way.

‘Ah…” Rimuru began to sweat. ‘What does that make me?!’ He had devoured Ranga’s father.

Great Sage: Answer the use of skills such as dissolve and predator, break down the soul either returning it to magicules, exorcising it from the body, or putting the soul to rest.

Rimuru breathed a sigh of relief, he typically used his skill after he slayed an enemy so the soul wasn’t a concern. It was a good thing to note. He also didn’t want his little Squishy to be tainted like that. This world was kinda brutal, an eat or be eaten kind of existence. The one who had killed the previous Rigur was in fact Gao, Ranga’s father.

“So the one leading the hunting party now is...Riguru.” Rigurd nodded. The incubus recalled how they met. He remembered Ranga leading a party as well. “Riguru, Ranga, please step forward.”

The two approached. “I need you both to lead two parties, one for hunting, the other for foraging.” They bowed their heads.

“It’d be an honor Lord Rimuru!”

“Riguru, you shall lead the hunting party, select your forces and head out.” He went over the rules with them again just to be sure, if they come across humans they are to not engage or retreat. “With your strength I’m sure you can handle the task.”

Riguru blushed and smiled. “Yes sir!”

“Ranga, I want you to lead the foraging party, use that gifted nose and instincts of yours to find plants safe for us to eat.” He asked the Lunacentaur. ‘With any luck we can hopefully farm at some point.’

“Yes master!” Ranga bowed.

“You two know the forest well, so I’m counting on you.” They blushed.

“We won’t fail!” Ranga hoped that if he did a good job Rimuru would reward him.

The two formed their parties and raced off in opposite directions. Rimuru and Rigurd remained behind, tackling the shelter problem. There was a big problem, because of their transformations, the goblin huts were not up to size. Trying to construct larger homes was proving difficult. ‘While I was a general contractor I don’t have any hands on skills to pass onto them.’

Some hobgoblins tried their best, but the building collapsed. So far they were making do with tents. Their biggest facility was destroyed by Ranga’s excitement. Rimuru watched the half naked hobgoblin studs work up a sweat trying to put up a new house for him, only for it to collapse.

“Forgive us Lord Rimuru!” Rigurd bowed his head.

“Relax, Rome wasn’t built in a day.” He was rather enjoying the show.

“Uhh Rome?” Rimuru chuckled.

“Forget about it, it’s not important.” The incubus waved it off. It looked like they weren’t gonna be making much headway on this yet. “Say Rigurd, your son had a name, who named him?”

Rigurd knelt down. “It was a demon in a mask, a man known as Gelmud. He said my son was the strongest, so he gave him a name.”

‘I should have asked Ranga, who gave his father his name. It couldn’t possibly be the same guy could it.’ It was…

Truly the Great Forest of Jura was a prize, one that had drawn the sights of Clayman. With his sinister plot, he sent the demon Gelmud as his pawn to claim the area, in this little game. Like a rat he’s slipped in and was making a mess of the forest. Their goal was to create a new demon lord, one Clayman could get his claws into and have as his puppet.

It seemed he was giving names to monsters at random, the goblins with Rigur, the wolves with Gao, he had even given a name to a lizardman now known as Gabiru. He had hit three of the five major clans already, but that’s not all he’d done.

Naming a more powerful monster took a lot of magicules, etching a name already on an existing soul. Gelmud was a higher echelon but his magicules were not infinite. So he took a gamble on naming some other monsters found in the forest, a smaller investment but it could lead to higher rewards.

Insect-Type Magical Beasts could be found all over the forest, some were instinctively afraid of Gelmud and stayed away from him. One was not so wise, sensing a chance to obtain a soul it attacked.

The spider-like beast Rimuru devoured was known as a Big Spider or Cave Spider. It could be seen as a B ranked monster by humans. Not only were they fast, they would aggressively attack humans, typically one needed a party of 3 or more to defeat one. Thankfully they were territorial, not even liking other Big Spider’s into their territory, so swarming wasn’t an issue.

What attacked Gelmud was known as a Forest Spider, considered a C Rank Monster, it was known to set traps and feast on prey unlucky enough to get caught in it. The thing was most prey of value was either too strong or too smart to fall into it’s traps, so it was hungry, so very hungry. Almost mad with hunger it attacked, but it was just a magical beast.

Gelmud was easily able to fend it off. “You have some spirit, I shall give you a name, don’t worry, you won’t be hungry again!” After naming the beast Girigiri it gained some terrifying skills.

Egg Laying allowed it to mass produce numbers, Kin Control would give it command over its offspring, and Poison Arts. In a short time Girigiri was able to create an army, taking over a small territory in the forest.

The spider army served as drones, going out and collecting food for the king. Not only did the children weave traps, they had poisonous fangs from their father’s poison arts. Girigiri’s mass harvesting of magical beasts was a problem. To say nothing of the fact he kept the food for himself. If his children were hungry they could simply eat each other, he could always make more. His soul was corrupted by Greed, taking more and more. “More, bring me more, bring me more quality food, go!”

His army spread, expanding the territory day by day. The strongest of his children had survived the cannibalism, the sinister act causing their poison to evolve and grow stronger. A sign of how terrifying they were, they found another direwolf pack, swiftly catching them, poisoning them, and bringing them to their master to feed on.

They did have to be careful, if they got too powerful Girigiri devoured them to feed his greed. As he got stronger so did the next batch of his children he made. If he wasn’t stopped he’d soon be hatching A class threats and with their growing numbers they might be increased to S.

So when Riguru took his party out for hunting they weren’t finding much, walking into danger without knowing. A lot had changed in just a few days while Rimuru was out of commission. “What happened here?”

Not only were they not finding any game, but the forest was looking...sinister. There was webbing connecting the trees reducing the natural light. Thanks to Dark Vision this wasn’t a problem for the hobgoblins. “It’s creepy!” Gobta trembled.

“Stay focused!” Rigur said.

“Captain, shouldn’t we fall back.”

Riguru paused, he didn’t want to return with nothing, but something was definitely wrong. With all these webs it was strange not to see any spider monsters, and with the vast amount of them they should see at least one. “Let’s go back and report to Lord Rimuru.”

It was a bit too late for that, they had become prey as soon as they stepped into the territory. Girigiri’s children used the web network to move swiftly through the trees and surrounded the group. Some even employed camouflage covering themselves in leaves to look like bushes.

Gobta noticed the moving bushes and freaked out. “Captain!” He cried out.

Making noise was a bad move as the spider army attacked. The ones hiding as bushes surrounded them while others descended from the trees. “Hold formation!”

Gobta was shaking like a leaf. When one of the spiders attacked, he panicked and ducked causing one of his friends to get grabbed. He was pulled, bitten, and wrapped up in webs so quickly.

“No!” Riguru cursed.

The one who nabbed him tried to make off with him as its prize. “Stone Shot!” Riguru conjured a stone in the air firing it off and smashing the spider. His friend was still paralyzed and wrapped up, but he was safe.

“SCREEEEE!” The spiders let out a terrifying cry as the party got jumped from all sides.

Using their weapons the hobgoblins tried to fight back, killing some of the spiders on the ground, only to get snatched up by the ones coming from above. Again the spiders acted fast, biting and injecting the hobgoblin with poison to paralyze them, and swiftly wrapping them up. “Gale!”

Riguru unleashed another spell, sending powerful winds into the air, disturbing the webs, blasting the spiders, and causing his friends to drop. The web like cocoon broke their fall. He had Gobta gather the cocoons before casting Shield, it was a make shift barrier at best, and the spiders did try to go after them, but because of the limited space Gobta was able to swing and hit them.

As much as he wished to burn these horrors alive, unleashing a Fireball here would cause harm to the forest. “Lightning Bolt! Aqua Arrow! Stone Shot!” He cast spell after spell taking out as many of the spiders as he could, if they tried to come at him from above he used Gale to mess up their formation.

They fought back with Web Control, trying to grab and bind Riguru, but he used Nimble Escape to dodge. He was doing quite well, there was just one problem. ‘There’s too many of them!’ He began to sweat.

It felt as if he killed one two more took it’s place. They started getting in closer, so Riguru had to fight them off with weapons before casting spells again. ‘There is no end to them!’

“Captain!” Gobta cried as the shield began to crack.

‘I need to hit multiple ones at once or we are done for!’

The World: Notice: Chain Lightning, Rain Arrow, and Stone Barrage have been acquired. Goblin Skills: Message, Acid Arrow,  and Firebolt acquired.

Riguru smirked. “Rain Arrow!” A rain of water arrows came down and began to skewer the ones on the ground. Some tried to stay high up on trees and attack at a distance with Web Control. “Chain Lightning!”

Lightning struck out, hitting the spider before jumping over to hit another one. This happened a few times, losing power with each one, only to singe the sixth. His shield fell.

Riguru was left panting, he had burned a lot of magic. ‘Is it over?’

Gobta ran over to him. “You were amazing captain!”

“Let’s get out of here.”

Snatch!

Gobta was grabbed by webs and hauled into the air. This was a change of tactics. “Gobta!” Riguru rushed to save him.

It took five spiders to grab Riguru and bind him. One of them getting him by the throat, the others his wrists and ankles. He was pulled up into the air. Using the last of his magic he sent a message to Lord Rimuru.

Killing all those spiders drew attention from Girigiri, so he took control of his kin and manipulated them enough to hatch out a nasty plan. ‘This one is full of magicules, I’m sure to evolve and gain all his power if I eat him alive!’ The once scrawny spider had grown fat, as he moved to devour his prey.

He didn’t wanna risk trying to get his children to bring him in, this one was tricky, so he planned to finish him off himself, but just in case he marched with his strongest guards following him.

To be continued The Incubus and the Spider

Rimuru gets the message and learns Riguru is in trouble and quickly rushes to his aid. He proves to be too much for the spider monster, but Girigiri sacrifices the last of his children to escape. He runs into Gelmud who decides he has no further use of him and goes to feed him to his new promising project. Rimuru hopes Ranga isn’t having this much trouble.
