Chapter 7 Life As A Pet
Julius thought that maybe Leon was messing with him about the glamour charm, that he was about to walk out there, naked and caged. Bite! The thought shouldn’t have aroused him but it did.
They stepped off and Julius met the Bartfort family.
Leon’s parents were nice, very warm and loving. He couldn’t remember his parents ever acting so lovey dovey. ‘Even Marie and I don’t act like this.’ He was always just buying her things. ‘Is this what Leon meant by what she does for me?’
Despite their low rank they seemed so happy. “Big Brother!” Colin raced up to Leon and was met with a hug.
“Sup little brother, you been keeping up with your training?” He nodded.
“Sure have, I want to be super strong like you Big Brother!” Leon smiled and ruffled his hair.
“I’m sure you will!” Julius was getting to see a whole new side of Leon.
“Leon, how could you be so reckless, challenging the prince like that?” Balcus asked.
“Lay off dad, I took care of it. Those guys needed a reality check.” Balcus didn’t know what to say. “What about Jenna?”
“She confessed to trying to help Jilk-sama sabotage your match. I’ve taken Miauler from her and she’s working the fields as punishment.”
‘Jilk did what?’ Julius was stunned. They didn’t know he was there so they had no reason to lie. ‘What did you do?’ Bartfort would tell him what happened later and even play the audio of Jilk’s confession.
Leon didn’t feel bad, Jenna had bought Miauler with his money that she borrowed. His contract essentially was to the family. The Bartfort family didn’t have many servants since they faced financial difficulties. It was thanks to Leon they had the recent boon.
Jenna’s punishment was a wake up call to Finley. She’s been studying and not asking for a servant of her own. She often looked up to Jenna but her sabotaging their own brother was crossing a line.
He made up a story about the Prince waiting for him back on his island.
Of course Zola had to give a peace of her mind to Leon. Julius watched as Zola behaved like how many of the viscount/baron noblewomen acted. She was cruel, arrogant, and greedy. “You stupid man, how dare you act in such a way and shame the family name. Just know if we have to pay for your deeds I’ll take the cost out of this household!” She didn’t care about the family name, mostly, she just didn’t want the financial responsibility.
Julius looked between Zola and Luce, they were both married to Balcus but treated him very differently. Zola was the “official” wife, but with how she acted she didn’t love him. “In fact I expect more tribute for the headache your idiot son has caused!”
“That’s not fair, big brother helped Angelica isn’t that what knights are supposed to do!” Collin shouted.
Smack!
Zola didn’t even hesitate, she struck the young man. “Collin!” Leon rushed over to him, only to be struck as well.
“Stupid insufferable man, all of you are alike, worthless!” Zola was a fanatic believer in Female Supremacy, before the prince she showed her true colors, seeing men as nothing but livestock. “If only you gave me daughters, but you keep making stupid men!” She struck Balcus. “Why do I put up with you?”
Julius had enough and was about to say something but Leon stopped him. “I took care of everything, Angelica’s father swore that the family wouldn’t be punished over the duel.”
“You stupid fool the whole kingdom is a buzz with what happened. This can effect our standing as well you fool, we’ll be guilty via association.” She fanned herself. “What if my idiot son suffers from your foolishness, if he can’t marry what good is he?”
Speaking of Rutart was standing in the wings. Julius noticed he was standing more like a servant than a member of the family. Rutart was believed to be the son of Zola and Balcus, but Leon wasn’t sure. He’d be Leon’s eldest brother if he was, but Zola was having all kinds of affairs so it was hard to know for sure.
Julius noted that Zola’s words hurt Rutart, and he struggled to hide it. ‘This is what Leon has been dealing with?’
Merce looked back at her brother and smirked at him. This wasn’t something new, both her and their mother treated him like a servant in their own house. Nothing he did ever pleased them, but Zola filled his head to have a noble’s pride even if he was a “good for nothing man”. So he ended up becoming slothful and lazy, coasting on his title, and using social connections to get ahead. His efforts even brought merit to Zola, but she just took it like she deserved his reward.
“You should have done as you were told and married my friend. You are just lucky she found a more appreciative young man to marry.” Rutart made a face.
‘He’s already dead, the old hag will no doubt be living off his benefits for awhile before looking husband number 9.’
Zola looked at Collin. “You best have taught that one better manners, once he comes of age I’ll be finding him a suitable bride.”
‘Not a chance in hell you bitch!’ Leon’s hand balled into a fist and he was shaking in anger. He’d have loved nothing more to teach Zola a lesson, but she had influence in the kingdom. One wrong move and it’d be his family that suffered.
“Where is the prince, we must meet so I can apologize to him and offer proper compensation.” Julius felt ill.
“So that’s why you are here. You wanna suck up to the prince.” Again Zola slapped him.
“Filthy cur, do you think I’d be wasting my time here otherwise. You’ve caused a mess but I’ll use this chance to curry favor with the prince. Perhaps I can’t get Rutart a high position or even get him a position as a knight. He’ll be set and if he dies protecting the prince then our family will have it made.” Judging from the look on Rutart’s face this wasn’t something new for him to hear. “I’ll be staying here until I meet the prince, you lot can stay in the shack away from the main house.” She made a shoo-shoo gesture.
“Come on kids, I’ll move your stuff.”
‘He’s just giving in?’ Julius couldn’t believe it. He couldn’t imagine having to be forced to leave your own home to sleep in a shed or a barn for such a thing as a visitor.
Thankfully this didn’t happen as Angelica arrived. Julius watched as Zola’s personality flipped instantly when she learned who she was. She excused herself and quickly fled back to the capitol, taking her children with her.
Rutart glared at Leon as he left. His eyes burned with jealousy. Bartfort noticed but just sighed. Julius recognized that look, his friends had similar looks in their eyes.
Leon shed tears of joy, seeing Zola get checked by Angelica’s status alone was priceless. Even Julius was surprised, usually Angelica was so timid around him, he had no idea she was such a bad ass. Angelica had Zola’s number right off the bat. “It seems you have your own troubles you must deal with.”
Collin showed her around the place.

“Why did you stop me? I could have done something.” Julius confronted Leon.
“Actually you couldn’t have, you got disinherited remember.” The bluenette twitched.
“As a pet, I knew you’d be safe, Zola’s a nut job but she wouldn’t go against social customs unless something was in it for her. If you stepped in she’d have made you suffer.” Julius felt true frustration. He saw something so awful but didn’t have any power or status to do anything.
“You deal with that all the time?”
“Only when she’s here, she loves to show up and make our lives miserable.”
“What about your brother?”
“Who Rutart?” He sighed. “I wanna feel bad for him, living with Zola 24/7 can’t be easy, but when I’ve tried to reach out to him he treats me like I’m trash and looks down on me.” He shrugged he couldn’t do anything if Rutart refused his help. The Bartfort family name didn’t appear in the game that he noticed so he had no idea what fate had in store for them.
“Like in the fight, you were trying to help us?” Julius realized that they had also looked down on Leon as being beneath him. So much so they didn’t listen to what he was saying as anything...
“Yep, but sometimes words don’t get through so you gotta kick some ass to make a point.”
“Why did your father marry that woman?”
“Didn’t have a choice, he’s a Baron so he had to marry a woman of adequate rank. Believe it or not he thinks Zola did him a favor by marrying him, even now…”
“Not all women are like that, they can’t be!” He remembered so many girls being nice to him including Marie. He had accepted it without question, but with Angelica he rejected her at face value.
“No not all women, but people change and act different when rank is involved.” Class played a huge roll in things, it wasn’t uncommon for low-class noblewomen like Zola having exclusive servants and cheating on their husbands. Julius saw it himself. “Zola is nuts, her group love how things are and want men to be kept as cattle. Her daughter is just like her. It’s why you gotta be careful and get to know people.”
Leon sighed again. “Lot of girls at the academy have the same attitude as Zola, that rank is everything. Even some of the girls who’ve approached me just want my money from my adventures.” The nicer girls get snatched up fast.
“You don’t think Marie is like that...do you?”
“Oh yeah dude, 100%, she’s dangerous.” Julius shook his head. “Zola only cares about what my dad does for her, it’s why she charges us and makes us pay her tribute. Zola has all the power my dad couldn’t even get the tribute reduced when we had bad storms and lost the crops. Zola didn’t care, she just wanted the money.”
“You saw it yourself, Angelica has good intuition. She was able to see Marie for who she was, while you were blinded by love and quick to throw everything away for her, even your life.” She was trying to protect him.
‘I hurt her...’
It was scary how much Marie was like Zola, she was greedy, unfaithful, and selfish. She didn’t even approach the guys about wanting the harem, she played with each of them and when they found out, she convinced them to just go with it for her sake. Even her nice girl persona felt like Zola’s fake one.
Julius who was so sheltered couldn’t see it, being love blind didn’t help. Now...he could see...the comparisons were shocking. As a pet no one sugar coated things around him. Because of class expectations a lot of people put up a front. ‘Leon really did something crazy, he knew the risks and didn’t care. He has everyone looking down on him, and still brought more anger and hostility towards himself.’
“But of course you should see for yourself, but keep your eyes open when you do.” He wasn’t just talking about Marie.
Leon gave his leash to Angelica and asked her to walk his familiar. “Can you walk this guy for me? He’s a good listener so if you got something to get off your chest go for it.”
“Oh sure.” Angelica led the naked prince around on a leash, not that she knew.

“You know, I was engaged to the prince. Our engagement was arranged when we were both very young.” Julius gulped, he was about to hear Angelica, and see a side to her he hadn’t known was there. “I was happy with the match, Julius was always so cool and kind. I always believed he’d make a great king someday, so I worked hard to become someone worthy to be by his side.”
Julius had no idea she worked so hard. ‘She did all that for my sake.’
“I used to watch him train and practice. To be honest I was always kinda jealous of the guys cause they got to be so close to him. I had to settle with watching him from afar, aside from royal functions where we could be together. All this time I worked to be worthy of him, because I thought he was so great. Yet, all that time he was suffering and never knew it. How awful am I?” She laughed and shed tears.
‘No...it’s my fault...I should have told you...I didn’t see you...I…’
“When we both got our letters for the academy I was so happy. We could finally be together without royal status, I could approach him as a woman, but…” Julius didn’t need to hear he remembered.
He pushed her away, he checked her as a prince and saw her meddling as her trying to control him via their engagement. He had said over and over he wasn’t the prince at the academy but didn’t stop the guys from calling him by the title. Angelica saw that and did her best to serve her prince, even if he said one thing and did another.
“In the end I was too late, and that awful girl just gets to do as she pleases.” Angelica cried. “I loved Julius so much, but I was never in his sights.”
Julius’s eyes widened as he watched Angelica cry, he’d never seen her cry before. “That girl, it’d have been one thing is she was honest, but every time I looked into her eyes I could see that innocent act was a lie. Not only was she flirting with Julius but also the other guys as well, she took gifts from all of them and it made me sick because I knew what she was doing but every time I tried to warn Julius but I just came off as a jealous lover. I was just worried about him because I saw how manipulative she could be.”
Julius didn’t say a word, he didn’t feel he had any right to, even in the end he doubted Angelica’s actions and feelings towards him. ‘She did so much for me, I never realized and I was cruel to her.’
“I was stupid for challenging her to a duel, and even now I know he still cares for her. I just wanted to protect him, because I love him so much, but I was a fool.” She cried it out. “In the end, I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving him, but he’s not mine.” Angelica wiped away her tears. “All I can do is wait and see, and hope he finds someone new to love, and someone who’ll love him back for him.”
‘Angelica…’
She laughed. “Leon was right you are a good listener. Come on…” She led him around for a bit.
Julius had plenty of time with his thoughts. Angelica respected his position and didn’t challenge him on his choices, and he took that all the wrong way. ‘I’m an idiot!’ He had a good woman who loved him and tossed her away for Marie. His wires were completely crossed. He really didn’t know what love was...
By the time they made it back Leon had the shipped packed, Oliva had arrived and was ready to go, they headed for his island. “Did you enjoy your time as a pet?”
“It was...an eye opening experience…” He hugged Leon, surprising the dark haired male.
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m an idiot…”
“Ah…” Leon hugged him. “I got you buddy.”
Julius had a lot of time to reflect, he even got to sleep in Bartfort’s bed. His feelings for Marie were in flux, a part of him still was clinging to his time with Marie. ‘I need to see her at least one more time to figure out the truth for myself.’ He didn’t know if Marie was THE ONE anymore. Leon held him all night. ‘This man...his words and beliefs...reach deeper than mine. I don’t know if I could do what he did, his actions went against his class and position.’
He thought about all the other people who to protect their class left Angelica to twist in the wind. He thought about his own words and actions. Balcus was even more of a man than him, he took a wife to meet expectations and Julius could have done far worse than a woman like Angelica. He went through way more struggles, and met them head on, While Julius realized he was running away.
She wanted him to be happy. ‘Was I happy with Marie…?’
This time he spent with Leon, he’s felt so...happy!
To be continued...the Greatest Revenge
Julius gets clothes and apologizes to Angelica. Leon gives a lesson to Angelica. Olivia and Angelica bond.
