AN: friend has been showing me Kamen Riders and Sentai shows, they've been quite interesting and inspiring and while excellent for parodies a few may get added to the list for fic writing for that series
Buckle Hero
Izuku is quirkless, in a world of hero and villains he wanted to be a hero. Things weren’t appearing in his favor so he decided to take his future in the palm of his hand. He trained his body and worked on a system to help him become a hero. Midoriya crafted the Hero Belt with different buckles to use and fight.
Chapter 1
Izuku is quirkless, in a world of super powered individuals his future seemed bleak. In the world of Heroes and Villains, quirks were everything. At a young age he was deemed quirkless, he wouldn’t manifest a power from either of his parents or create one of his own.
Midoriya still wanted to be a hero. If he didn’t have a quirk he’d still find a way to save people. So he studied quirks, the heroes of the world made it easy. The boy filled notebook after notebook with notes and diagrams on how they used their abilities.
This was just step one, he took self defense classes and from there hit the gym to train his body. Heroes had to fight villains, even Rescue Heroes got pulled into combat. So he started honing his vessel. The greenette burned off his baby fat, trained his muscles, and added martial arts to his arsenal.
Last but not least, he put his nerd brain to good use to craft some new tech. Advancements in technology increased with the need of heroes. Support gear, enhancements, and the like had technology advancing bit by bit. Some quirks needed to be channeled through a device or suit to make them safer or easier to use.
Izuku took the theory to the next level. He worked every day, keeping up with training and his school work. Through his efforts he managed to create a belt that would allow him to transform. He called it the “Hero Belt”, he wasn’t the best at coming up with fancy names. His ideas for his own hero name were cute but not overly creative.
The transformation was just the start, Izuku had worked to create interchangeable weapons and tools in Buckles. They were still experimental and some lacked power. The Water Buckle gave him a pipe that could fire a stream of water, but the force of it wasn’t very powerful so it wasn’t very effective.
He kept tinkering and experimenting trying to prove he could be a hero. Being quirkless, he was looked down upon in Hero society. In this world quirks meant everything, your ability with a quirk determined your future. If your ability wasn’t powerful or flashy it meant you’d have to work harder if you wanted to be a hero.
Despite quirk mutations being a thing, the world still discriminated against those with Heteromorphic quirks still existed. There was even a popular list of “Heroes That Look Like Villains” and “Most Evil/Sinister Quirks”. Pros spoke out against such things but people would be people.
Among the types of quirks; Emitter/Operative, Transformation/Composite, Mutant/Heteromorphic, Manipulation/Accumulation, and Specialist, one could find a hierarchy. Fire quirks for example could be arranged into ranks based on the type of fire, the power/output, the control, etc etc…
Just as heroes were placed in ranks so to were their quirks. At even young ages students were praised for having flashy and powerful quirks. Not the best precedent, as even growing up with Quirk Therapy courses it gave the newest generation a warped view of the world.
So anyone with a quirk could become a hero, but their rank of hero would be determined by their quirk ability or popularity. That being said, students with quirks as simple as; pulling their eyes out of their head, inflating their throat like a frog, or stretching their neck, believed they had more of a future than someone like Izuku who didn’t have a quirk. Even people with non combat-esk quirks looked down on him as if he was truly worthless.
When it came to Hero Popularity, quirk power wasn’t everything, having a flashy or unique quirk was enough to interest the masses. Add that to impressive costumes, shining personalities, or creative uses of support gear, even someone with a “weak” quirk could become a popular hero. Once again this brought the mentality that having a quirk at all was better than not. So Midoriya was looked down upon and mocked for having nothing.
Izuku’s self defense and martial arts training was ignored. “Some villains can only be defeated with a quirk” this statement was an absolute fact in this world but it was used incorrectly by the masses. The matter of Quirk Match Ups was often ignored and the statement was just used to crush the dreams of those without powerful or combat quirks. A villain that could burst into flames would be a problem for someone who turns into wood, manipulates plants, or has a quirk that requires they touch the opponent, such heroes would struggle, in kind a hero who could conjure or manipulate water may not have as much trouble.
It was partly why Midoriya developed the Buckle system, so he could change buckles based on the situation and bring the right tool for the job.
There was a big case of this years ago when A Class Hero Sweet Mask was up against a grotesque villain Bacterian. Sweet Mask was seemingly unbeatable and his quirk defeated most opponents with a wink, but against Bacterian he lost and had to be rescued.
That didn’t matter as because to the fellow students, so long as they HAD a quirk, it meant they had more of a chance to defeat a villain compared to “defenseless” Izuku! In the student hierarchy while Midoriya was at the bottom, at the top was Bakugou Katsuki.
From at a young age Bakugou was praised for his quirk Explosion. It allowed him to produce a nitroglycerin-like sweat which he could detonate at will. The quirk was powerful and flashy so he received mountains of praise and inflated his ego. To make matters worse as he grew up his natural intelligence made him shine, and he was adept at athletics. He strives to be the best and while his gifted mind and body gave him an edge he didn’t coast on it.
Katsuki made everything look easy, but he was just three steps ahead, always looking ahead towards his goal of becoming the Number 1 Hero. The current Number One was All Might, aka the Symbol of Peace. Bakugou saw All Might as a hero of power, one who always wins and crushes his enemies with unstoppable might. This wasn’t the case but he wasn’t the only one who saw All Might that way, Endeavor the Number 2 Hero also believed this to be the case.
While kids in his class were studying for their lessons, Katsuki knew it all so to challenge himself he studied the next year’s lessons and the next. This gave him time to improve his quirk and train his vessel.
Some were drawn to him because he was so awesome, Izuku being one of them. He saw how amazing Katsuki was, and believed he’d be a great hero one day. Midoriya saw the blonde on a deeper level, he saw how hard he worked. Despite his achievements, he wasn’t...popular…
Bakugou was explosive and had a short fuse. He also had no issue looking down on others calling them extras, but that’s how it was in this society. To those that challenged him he fought back with all his might, believing crushing his opponent completely was the only way to win. His personality rubbed people the wrong way.
Even at a young age he saw himself as the leader and expected others to follow. Those that didn’t he’d cast aside and believed they were the fools for not listening to him or following him. His bolstered ego made this trait worse as the years marched on. Without anyone to challenge him properly his ego was left unchecked and the world continued to tell him he was right.
So he wasn’t winning anyone over in the personality department. To this day he had only a handful of followers, despite his talents he wasn’t able to unite the classroom. A feat All Might would have been able to complete. His idea of being a hero wasn’t exactly wrong, but it was more incomplete.
Thanks to Izuku’s struggles he figured out that while yes he wanted to be a hero like All Might who saved people with a fearless smile, he also needed to be prepared for villains and combat. His mother was worried about him, so he wanted to be strong so she wouldn’t have to worry.
Despite having Katsuki looking down on everyone, that advantage helped him notice something a lot of others didn’t. The little nobody who was always chasing him was getting closer. He could see Izuku crawling his way to the top, bit by bit, it was slow, but little by little he was surpassing the other extras even with their quirks.
Bakugou was mildly impressed, only mildly. They’ve known each other a long time. Izuku had been one of Bakugou’s followers for a time, but when they were kids there was an incident and Katsuki began trying to push Midoriya away. His efforts didn’t work, so he mainly just ignored him.
The blonde was odd, he saw the world through the quirk loving glasses society gave him. Despite being seen as a jerk, he never actually bullied Midoriya, just ignored him. He was bullied by other students, who felt that since they had power they could boss someone like Izuku around as they please, he couldn’t fight back right? He was either used as a gofer or as target practice.
Izuku didn’t know it but Katsuki stepped in on more than one occasion scarring the pathetic extras off. The greenette didn’t give up, he kept pushing, training, and working towards his dream.
In a lot of ways, he was better than the extras who were coasting on having a quirk. ‘But without a quirk that dumb ass would end up dead against a villain.’ The thought of Izuku dying left a bad taste in his mouth.
Izuku was good with tech, so lately he started thinking the “hero nerd” could be useful and be HIS nerd. Hero Agencies hired those capable of building and maintaining support gear all the time. So it was only logical to have a good tech head on staff.
When he heard Izuku applied for UA his blood ran cold. The UA HERO exam wasn’t a joke, the school was number one in japan for a reason, so the standards were high. Not only that, the exam to enter the hero course was intense, people got hurt sometimes and there were disclaimers and warnings of potential death. It was actually a rule that quirkless people couldn’t enter, apparently that had changed.
Hearing this, the whole class laughed. To think Izuku Midoriya would apply to UA, a quirkless nobody. It was only “logical” to laugh and mock him for such a bold display. Izuku sank in his seat, he was used to this. This was how everyone treated people who were quirkless, especially if they wanted to become a hero. The irony being many of them knew what it felt like to be looked down on, but instead of understanding, they instead took those frustrations and passed them on to someone “weaker” than them. It was quite sad and unhealthy really.
Even Bakugou who stood at the top faced the looming threat of the beyond. He was smart enough to know he was a big fish in a little pond, but emotionally wasn’t willing to accept it. So in a way he reveled in his own superiority, while in the back of his mind knowing that when he got into UA that could slip away.
After class Bakugou confronted Izuku. “Hey you damn nerd, you got a death wish?”
“Ehh?” Bakugou’s phrasing made it sound like the blonde was threatening him.
“If you wanna get into UA, do whatever but don’t even think of applying for the Hero track you got it!” UA offered other tracks beside hero courses, there was Support, Marketing, and Application tracks.
“I’ve already applied for the Hero Track, I’m going!” Izuku said firmly. Bakugou twitched.
‘You fucking idiot, do you have a death wish, you are throwing your life away.’ What he thought, but what he said was… “Do you wanna die!”
Izuku jumped and made a swift move, putting on his hero belt. “What the hell is that?” Midoriya smiled.
“Henshin!” He activated the belt and transformed. His clothes vanished in a swirl of energy being replaced with a skin tight body suit. Gloves, boots, and a mask/helmet appeared on him. The helmet was pretty generic but had a smile on it.
Katsuki’s eyes widened at the sight. His impression of Izuku grew, the amazing quality of the gear. It was simple but at the same time incredible. “So you got some tricks up your sleeve?”
Midoriya pulled out a buckle. “WATER!” His right arm became encased in blue armor, and he gained a right breast plate of armor and a pipe appeared in his hand. “Water Strike!”
Izuku aimed the pipe at Katsuki and...he got doused in water. “Ehh!” It wasn’t very powerful, the equivalent being splashing someone with a bucket of water. Bakugou twitched in annoyance.
“Deku…” His hands sparked with explosions.
Things did not go well, Katsuki unleashed his full fury onto the greenette. Midoriya did his best to defend himself but was overwhelmed by the blonde’s quirk. He was knocked back and de-transformed.
‘You see, you aren’t ready to be a hero, if I was a villain you’d be dead.’ Was what Katsuki thought, but what came out of his mouth was. “You’re dead, ya damn nerd!”
Midoriya groaned as he sat up and Katsuki walked away from him. “Give up on the hero track, with your skills you should qualify for the support course. Stay in your lane, and once I go pro I’ll hire you!” Bakugou meant it, but his tone made it sound really condescending.
‘Dang it, I thought I worked the kinks out, why didn’t Water work?’ He was a bit defeated but he knew he’d figure it out.
Little did he know, he’d show the power of his Buckles when the Sludge Villain attacked.
