15. The Nabataeans - The Final Days Of Petra

I'm happy to announce that Episode 15 is now out with a full video accompaniment, exclusively available to patrons.

This has been one of my favourite episodes so far - I've always been fascinated with Petra since I first visited many years ago, and the otherworldly beauty of the place really has to be seen to be believed. Thanks to everyone who has supported the channel and given us the budget to present these stories with the highest quality footage available.

Thanks as always for continuing to support the project, and for all the kind words we receive on Twitter, Reddit, and on here. All the best and I hope you enjoy!

Paul

I listened to the podcast twice. With the images, it is worth a third time. I love your podcasts. I am kind of torn in between going there - as a tourist. And not going, in order to not increase the impact of mass tourism... I don't know

Exactly my thoughts - just how humans, and every other species has evolved as a way of responding to, and adapting to environmental factors. It's simply fascinating. There are so many brilliant examples of how different civilizations sprang up all over the world and how they learned to survive and thrive in different environments. I thought one of the most fascinating examples was the how the Inca constructed a system of farming that enabled them to grow a variety of crops at different elevations and built structures that were able to withstand earthquakes because the stone was cut with such precision. Or how the Aztecs built a city on a lake - that two-part episode blew my mind. I listened to the part about the Cambrian period like 5 times, trying to imagine what that hellscape would have looked like.

I read about Petra as a child. A few years ago I actually went there. It was a great experience and this video helped me relive the experience.

I love to see a history of a civilization that starts with the Cambrian Period!! The way you capture the extent to which civilizations are shaped by and dependent on their natural environments continues to be one of my favorite aspects of the show.

It was the Sumerian and Assyrian podcasts which first brought me to FoC, but it was Nabatea that got me to become a patron

I'm new in and delighted about your content. As someone who likes to dig deeper into the matter, I'd like to ask, where I can find the sources for each episode?

Listening I can’t help but wonder whether an episode on Israel & Judaea (clear through to the Maccabean or even to the Jewish-Roman wars)could be in the cards for future episodes… πŸ€—

Fantastic as always!

Wonderfully well written and informative look at this fascinating people and place. The aerial and time-lapse images of the "Treasury" in Petra are the finest I've ever seen, and really capture the majesty of the place. Well done!

Paul this was stunning - Thank you for everything you and the team do!

English is still a language spoken today too, notice how it changes? Why do civilizations collapse? What happens afterwards? And what did it feel like to watch it happen? This podcast is about exploring these ideas, in what ways does a pronunciation of a word catered to his audience for clarity, impact what this podcast is about?

I really enjoyed this episode. Will always make me look at Petra in an entirely different way now.
