11. Byzantium - Last of the Romans (Part 1 of 2)

I'm very excited to announce the release of the video accompaniment to Episode 11, on the Byzantine Empire. This was one of the most enjoyable episodes to translate into video, as there's so much to see in terms of architecture, maps and images.
The community here on Patreon has allowed the show to increase its production budget, meaning that this episode is furnished with state-of-the-art CGI reconstructions of ancient Constantinople, created by the Turkish designer Evren ΓztΓΌrk. Evren has previously worked with Netflix on their series Ottomans, and his work is absolutely stunning. A huge thanks to the community here for allowing us to really make these documentaries the best they can be.
I want to thank you all for sticking with the show through these tough times. It really does mean the world, and I hope you enjoy.

Great work, as usual. Love all your content. Brief correction - the Siege of Baghdad had nothing to do with Genghis Khan - it was "the work" of Hulagu Khan. There is a later siege of Baghdad done by Timur, the great mongol king who defeated the Ottomans and kept their emperor Bayezid in a cage as his prisoner.

I enjoyed this immensely! You do an incredible job not only on the research but also with your ability to humanize history, and indeed to make us empathize with or ancestors. Thank you for all your work!

East Sussex Iβve been so looking forward to this. This is deeply absorbing, beautiful to look at, and substantial to sink into and think about during our own strange time. Also teaches you that destruction and rebirth, catastrophe and recovery, are part of the cycle from which it seems we never escape. Loved it, thanks.

I can't believe how good this content is. Just FASCINATING!!! You really get to experience it like you were there. The video is absolutely top notch, and the research and narration are captivating. Kind of puts "books" to shame I think at this point. Just have the kids watch this kind of content and our education system goes up 1000%.

I just finished part 1. This is just wonderful history and story telling. The Byzantines tried so hard to keep the light of Rome alive. Amazing story that isn't known by so many.
