5. The Khmer Empire - Fall of the God Kings

Episode 5 of Fall of Civilizations TV is now livem and as supporters of the show, you guys get to see it at least a week ahead of the rest of the world, and always completely ad-free.

This was one of the most enjoyable episodes so far to turn into video, since the ruins of Angkor in all their mossy brilliance really have to be seen to be believed.

When I started this show a little over a year ago, I did it on a complete shoestring budget. I had no capital to begin with, and so I used only free music and sound effects, and started it on a Soundcloud Basic subscription. It's absolutely thrilling to be able to return to these episodes with a higher budget - bringing premium music and effects to bear, and setting them alongside some of the latest photography from the world's top filmmakers and drone operators. None of this could be possible without your support, and I'd like to thank each and every one of you for making this happen.

I hope you're all coping well during this time of crisis, and I hope I can take your minds off things for a couple of hours.

Thanks and all the best,

Paul

I loved this. It helped me understand my Vietnamese ancestry.

Another informative episode. Thanks. However, a minor quibble, your leftist bias is showing when you say people are getting poorer - not so:https://blogs.worldbank.org/en/opendata/april-2022-global-poverty-update-world-bank#:~:text=The%20global%20poverty%20rate%20%28at%20the%20US%241.90%20poverty,pace%20in%20more%20recent%20years%2C%20as%20previously%20noted.

I grieve the inevitable DESTRUCTION the current empire is on, all greed and hubris. Mother Nature snickers as she knows we are not even able to defeat the banyan, at best we can only keep it in check until we surrender. They are as frightening as any parasite, but the worst parasite? Homo Sapiens.

Patrick Oh!

Wow, the visuals are mindblowing at times.. should see this on psychedelics one day.

Thank you Álvaro, very kind!

You are now probably the best Youtube historian.

Thank you, that's very kind of you to say! It's a big belief of mine that people don't remember facts, but they always remember stories. If you can find your character and their struggle, people will follow you along on their journey...

It's interesting to me that you present much information in order to give as complete a picture as is practically "doable", especially considering the complexities and scope of any civilization. And, accordingly, the story of their collapse will also be complex and large. I sometimes would feel that I would not be able to take it all in but you have made it so that i actually could. And you accomplished an equally tall order in just doing that. thank you!

Thank you Elizabeth, I really appreciate the kind words! I'm so glad you enjoyed, and I think you put really well the story of Angkor's decline.

And thank you...it did again take my mind off things for a couple of hours!

Such an incredibly beautiful and thought provoking study. A city built almost as a vanity project, the survival of which was dependent on an enormously labor-intensive infrastructure that in its own turn depended on the weather, and of course it began to collapse when the 'god' who owned the place eventually vanished and the weather betrayed them too. All those wars, back and forth, again for nothing but vanity, as most wars go I suppose but these don't appear to be about resources. The production, once again, is stunning and professional.
