Patrons only; Arakeen painting step by step

I used a particle map to distribute boxes of various sizes onto a plane object; the boxes spawned at vertices of the plane so it was possible to give their layout some strucutre. Rendering that provided a texture of roof shapes which formed the basis of the city of arakeen. the mountains are a desert texture applied to a plane object which has been deformed upward by a NASA surface topography heightmap.. i used lots of photo textures for example a city at night on a lighten layer to add some impressions of warm street lights to the nearby streets. After it was all feeling ok I just painted on the top using the colour picker to select a colour and paint more of it; implying bounced sunlight streaming throught the Cut in the shield wall was reflecting off the temple and megastructure..

Lemme know if you have any questions on a particular step or aspect of the picture!

In pre-production, it svery loose. Notes, sketches of those notes, a good-enough version. Later in the project all that work forms the basis for the real chunky work of building everything for real. So at the start, its all about design, with presentation a second priority. So long as it sells the idea and discribes the details sufficnetly its fune. Later, design drops to nil and its all about presentation. Sometimes that cycle repeats. I like working in pre-production personally. Im still learning all the time and failing plenty, but id say speed and capturing a mood is key. I wouldnt worry too much about Artstation, all that work is self selected to get Likes, that will set the priorities of the piece. Hence so many girls butts and highly polished images; that reliably gets likes from a broad swath of users. Look up making of documentaries for games and movies, youll see much concept art is pencil sketches and colour scripts and stuff. Very loose and fast.

Hi Alex! Thanks a lot for that breakdown. I was wondering if most directors are okay with that final level of finish for keyart/moodshot preproduction work? A lot of the film work I see on artstation is pushed so far but Im not sure if it's up to the artist or if that is a requirement of the film industry.
