I was recently (less then 10 months ago) diagnosed with manic depressive disorder (apparently what bpd is being called now) and severe anxiety. I was put on Zoloft and hydroxyzine to help combat it. In the past it had helped but a few days ago on the 22nd I hit a depressive phase and when I took the meds and fell asleep (hydroxyzine is also used to help me sleep) I woke up on the verge of a panic attack that lasted for nearly 12hrs. The constant feeling of everything closing in around you, the feeling of not being able to or hardly being able to breathe, the paranoia, and being utterly alone is indescribable. For the past 25 years everyone I know knew there was something going on with me but either didn’t care or didn’t know what to do. For years I just told myself to man up and FITFO. Not seeking help when I should have caused me great psychological harm and has affected many of my relationships with both friends and SO’s. My ex-wife had no idea how to deal with it/me and (I believe) was a contributing factor to our divorce (I don’t blame her for not knowing especially since I didn’t know how to either). I have a strong distrust of therapists which I will not go into her as this is already long as it is, but I learned that having somebody (SO or friend(family tend to either be patronizing or indifferent)) that’s extremely close and supportive has been better than any medication. Listening to this while I’m still going through the phase and just being able to shut my eyes and listen (while only temporary) is really helpful in lessening the pain and anxiety.
