[Tier 2] ATEEZ ''By Hongjoong - Beat It' Production Behind

And here we are wit the production behind video for Hongjoong's cover of BEAT IT! :D

Still find it hard to articulate but there was something special about this cover, and this bts clip only amplified that feeling. We try our best to describe it, and we do go into many things pre-prod related, but because of our fixation on that sensation, we failed to go in depth with many topics we wanted to discuss.

So if you had ANY question about anything shown in the video, or said by us or HJ, feel free to let us know and we'll keep an eye out to reply asap! :)
But if not, please let us know what you thought about this video, what your take was on how HJ approached this project, and whether this episode was indeed an objectively special one out of all the other By Hongjoong series (for those who've seen it all that is)!

Comments

I'm glad Hongjoong chose Beat It for his last By.Hongjoong project. This song is TOUGH and ICONIC and taking it on is not an easy feat. But what I love about HJ is his passion, spirit, and drive and you can sense all of that in this production. To use all internal staff and crew on a solo project that started with a projector and for it to end on such a large scale, shows not only how much he believes in himself and his growth as an artist and producer but also how much the staff and crew believed in him and see his growth too. This will probably forever be my favorite cover of his, but I'm so looking forward to what he shows us in the future.

I second this!! 😊

teetiny48

and I agree 1000% with you, wholeheartedly!

papa-nims .. im in the middle of watching (im lazy to check) but i remember you guys reacting to Be Alright by yunho && im begging!!! for you guys to react to the recording behind of it. its logbook #165 & you get to not only see yunho be an amazing singer BUT ALSO Hongjoong's producer side!! the whole song is directed by hongjoong with some of yunhos input and i think its such a cool dynamic that they show on screen as teacher x student. you discover a new side of yunho and get an insight of HJ as a producer & i watch it like once a day since it came out. no kidding. send help. Absolutely. Totally fine to dislike something or have a different opinion or take if it's a personal preference! But unnecessarily harsh comments or subjective takes disguised as objective can be very harmful! PERSONALLY, we really thought he did the song justice and if you couldn't tell, I (d'some) REALLY felt something VERY SPECIAL about this cover from the getgo. You can just FEEL how sincere and serious HJ is about the project and how it's NOT AT ALL just a COVER for him. So I stand by my take that this is even more special than it seems. Even more special than I think it is for him. More stories untold behind the scene that makes the whole thing special on a VERY personal level. I felt that. So I believe that!

I actually hadn't had a chance to sit down and watch this yet, but I'm so glad I got to watch it for the first time with you guys. This cover was so special and being able to see the growth in the by.hongjoong series is so incredible, I can't wait for you guys to get to the others! I totally agree that it was so special seeing the teamwork that went into creating this project. Like you guys mentioned, you can really tell how collaborative the environment is and close they are, which is something that I really like about KQ generally (of course there is more that we don't see as with all companies, but I think the atmosphere and family they've built is something special) And like you guys said, you could really feel his passion and love for the project the entire time, which came through so beautifully. It made me sad to read through some of the comments here saying that he got a lot of hate for this (I guess I live in my own little bubble online because I didn't see any of that) but I hope he hears the love and praise louder than all of that. anyways I could yap for a lifetime about how much I love hongjoong and this cover and by.hongjoong lol

Sonali

Oh I didn't know. But I still think the same way. These kinds of things increased his passion.

I think he started the covers that became BY. HONGJOONG both because he loves those songs and also because he produced them himself. When he was talking here about being together 10 years he didn't mean Eden - Eden isn't involved - he meant Yu Jin the choreographer. If you watch them in order you can see his progression as a musician and performer. (and as an English-speaker) I was so sad when I saw he had included FIN in the title - until I watched it. Then I realized... Ah - he's graduated BY. HONGJOONG. This is his thesis. I saw several posts saying it felt a bit like his solo debut. He's ready to concentrate on just making new music now. I wish he had included talking about the themes and message though instead of leaving that just to a livestream though.

I just want to clarify that Travis was already following ATEEZ before the cover

Watching you guys go back and forth at the end was so funny 😭😭😭

Sorry for the rant, but this reaction healed me and I need to externalize! I love seeing people genuinely appreciating someone’s hard work. Mind you, a big majority have praised Hongjoong for this, and rightfully so, but watching the reactions has been ... an interesting social experience, lol. For example, two tweets about the cover gained a lot of attention and praise, but one was hijacked by another fandom and flooded with hate (likely what another comment referred to). Was a very "funny" example of echo chambers and sheep mentality in action as the tweet that didn’t encounter that fandom was filled entirely with compliments from non-atinys. Then, I watched a YouTuber (a DJ) react to this live, with a chat full of the same fandom (ah!), and wow. It’s fascinating how easily opinions are swayed by the majority. Seeing how his viewers reacted, he concluded that the cover was "an injustice to MJ," said there was "nothing to compliment," and called the rap "a travesty." (I won't say anything about his "pronunciation" comment as it felt xenophobic and that's a discussion for another day). And tbh, I was still fine with it, and I would’ve accepted it as personal taste. But what irked me the most was when he and his chat claimed Hongjoong did this "lightly." That’s when I just left the reaction altogether. I instantly hoped you two would react to it asap because I knew it would soothe me, haha. Even if the song wasn’t your cup of tea, I knew you’d be honest and respectful, and you’d still appreciate the effort. (This also put things into perspective for me, cause i'm the type of person who usually doesn't care about people's opinions. But the way I fixated on one negative reaction, despite thousands of positive responses, really helped me understand how idols, unfortunately, can’t help but focus on the negative, despite the overwhelming amount of praise.)

I understand Hongjoong's approach to wanting to pay tribute to the artists who inspired him and I find it very courageous because he has nothing to gain from it. I think he wanted and even needed to do it his way. And that's what it's all about, he did all these covers adding his touch. He didn't just perform songs he revisited them and I wonder if that's not the hardest part with songs he's probably been listening to since he was young.

I wish we could always get in detail production videos like this! It is so much fun to see everything come together and it makes you see the finished product in a new light as well. I also just love how you can tell how much this project means to Hongjoong. I think he would be a really cool person to work with. Big yes to a live stream nerding out about production 🧡I used to work in theatre and we did a lot of musicals and dance which is not exactly the same but there is some overlap in terms of behind the scenes stuff

Coco Nies

Thank you! It was so much fun to watch this again with you both, and so interesting to get a bit more context about how music recording actually feels like from either side. I absolutely love this cover and its been stuck in my head almost since it came out. The production behind just makes me appreciate Hongjoong's (and all of the staff, dancers, etc!) passion and dedication so much more as well. If you're interested in seeing more of the behind the scenes for Ateez, I saw someone mentioned the Coachella documentary episodes which I would also highly recommend! They also released similar to this recording/dance learning for both Work and Ice on My Teeth that are really cool if you get a change to check them out :) Can't wait for you both to see the rest of the By.Hongjoong series!

I loved rewatching this with you guys so much - thank you 🧡 There's actually a playlist called 'Z-Side Track' that contains all of the members' solo projects including the By.Hongjoong series. You've actually already reacted to most of the videos on that list 😄 I think only a couple of videos and the rest of By.Hongjoong are left ☺️ Here's the link: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_G3lYLGW-D-5X51PfpYn4hdmJTaj-J8P&si=ce_ror_ulzulhJIz Also, seeing how much you love and enjoy the production videos, you absolutely have to watch the Coachella making of videos (#1 & #2) someday 🥺

Martina

This was so special 🥰 seeing the whole process and the support from the company is just wholesome. Hongjoon is a true star who LOVES what he does

Megs

I think hongjoong initially made this series to cover the artists who inspired him to be a musician (as he said). but later Atiny and other people's love for these covers, and the people connected to the artists he covered noticed his cover. For example, this cover was noticed and highly appreciated by Michael Jackson's choreographer Travis Payne. After this cover, Travis Payne started following Ateez account and members accounts.I think such things increased his passion even more. but unfortunately, in addition to the love he received as a result of this cover, he also received a lot of hatred. He was criticized for his accent and vocals, they said that no one can be like Michael Jackson (so this is a cover. How can they be ridiculous enough to write such a thing?). But I saw how much effort he put into this and how happy he was while doing it. I think what makes an artist the most attractive is showing him how much he loves what he does. Finally, if you want to watch more covers, jongho and hongjoong made covers of a lot of micheal jackson, jason mraz and similar artists on the program called moving voices as busking on the streets of Germany. I definitely recommend you to watch it.

I think HJ's rap was so point on.
