[Tier 3] ATEEZ - Not Too Late (Lyrics + Weekly Playlist)

This is ATEEZ's Not Too Late - a surprisingly emotional final track that made us talk a LOT more about the lyrics and the meaning than the music itself. We didn't see this coming.

We actually appreciated this shift in tone because it got us to talk about the music in a different way and it forced us to think in a different way too.

We say enough in the video so I'll just use this space to further clarify some Korean talk we had in the video.

엄마 아빠나 잘 살어: the ...나 put on the subject implies that that person should focus on X instead of others / something else. In this sentence, the X would be 잘 살어, meaning live well, or take care of yourselves in life, changing the entire meaning to 'mom, dad. Focus on your own lives instead of mine'. But when the sentence is written as...

엄마 아빠 나 잘 살어: it changes the meaning completely to 'mom, dad. I am doing well' since '' is no longer attached to the subject and therefore takes on the meaning of 'I'.

We've actually talked about this briefly during one of our SKZ log reactions (I think) with the phrase, 아버지가방에들어가신다 - a classic Korean phrase used to talk about the importance of spacing in Korean.

If you say 아버지가 방에 들어가신다, it means 'Father is entering the room' (아버지 = father, 방 = room, 들어가다 = enter). But if you say 아버지 가방에 들어가신다, it becomes 'Father is entering a bag' (아버지 = father, 가방 = bag, 들어가다 = enter).

Another often-used phrase is 아 기다리고 기다리던, which is an exclamatory phrase that roughly translates to 'ah! The long awaited...'. But you'll see a lot of Koreans intentionally changing the spacing to write 아기다리 고기다리, which mutates the sentence to a nonsensical phrase that means 'baby leg meat leg'.

So yeh, very important in Korean to have the right spacing XD

Anyways, hope you enjoy, and if you have other questions, let us know! :) (and of course, if you have the answers to our questions, that too)

Love <3

Hands down my fave track in the album. Idk, this song just feels so raw and personal.

Ateez are all really good singers. Jongho is a great vocalist, the best in kpop for me. But San...his voice ...my god! Sooo beautiful, so emotional. He's one of the rare artist who give me goosebumps when he's singing. I want to hear more of him. I'm really frustrated.

Matsu Makky

It's weird seeing ATEEZ being serious like that for the song, because on Weekly Idol, they are CHAOTIC.

The arts and humanities have it so tough, man. I respect the hell out of anyone who does the thing. I'm a scientist and all my creative pursuits don't get any energy anymore. My bestie has two bachelors, a masters from Cambridge, and a PhD. All focused in writing / poetry and she's getting paid peanuts to teach and is just too demoralized to write. I could tell this story about so many people I know in creative fields. So much love and respect to y'all working hard at it.

This is my favorite song on the album. It's so moving. The interplay between it too late, its not too late still gets me. After this song came out Hongjoong talked about why they don't just have hopeful happy songs. He said it was important to him that their listeners know that they are not alone in their sad and difficult times. That they aren't the only ones who ever feel that way. That it's ok to have those feelings. All the members have talked about how hard the first few years after debut were for them. How they thought debut would would fix all of the doubts and concerns and insecurities but that it didn't. Especially given their coming from a small company and it not being clear from one album to the next if they would continue. I think this song clearly comes out of those first few years. Also I just need you to think about this song coming out while Mingi was on hiatus and nobody knew for sure if/when he was coming back. The extra emotional layer was a lot.

Yes, Hongjoong and Mingi always write their raps in the song even if the song is not the one they wrote in full, they are always in the writing credits for their verses! Hongjoong and Mingi's raps are their personal feelings, it's very touching how they connected to the song, and you could feel the real emotions. Not Too Late is one of my favorites and is a crying song for me lmao.

"Turbulence" BAND Live version on it's KPOP LIVE: https://youtu.be/BycpPeGWM-c?si=ywXURgzp7Qp1_h3h "Turbulence" at 2021 MAMA: https://youtu.be/ZLNJwzxEeoE?si=qOdcNAkcwltaSn3w Both Excellent live versions!!

The next album is my favorite! I was just listening to it today and I still get choked up listening to Be With You. 😭😭 And Better is definitely underrated. The live clips of Better are so fantastic!

Sinbad

As someone already mentioned, Hongjoong and Mingi write their own parts, I guess once they discovered the song. In the case of Not too late the lyrics particularly moved Hong joong, I think that's why it feels like the whole song is by him. Here is an extract from a showcase where Members talk about Not too late, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M7k67yR-zI

i love this song so much its my go to comfort song or if i just feel the need to cry, like turbulence or fever i can relate to the lyrics a lot!! They actually have an orchestra version for turbulence that they've been performing on tour and they put it on the Live CD they just released but its not on streaming or uploaded anywhere yet and the few fancams dont have the best sound :( but if it gets uploaded in the next days i would love for you to react to that version! :3

I thought so 😍🙏🏻

Martina

That's correct! If you look at the credits they're always there 👏

This album is one of my favorite from them all because of All About You and Not Too Late, this two songs are just soooo beautiful and the lyrics are very touching. I don't remember if the members or Hongjoong himself talked about the meaning behind the song but we can easily see that this song is connected to their trainee era with all the doubts, struggles and fears that come with it but still the hope that something bigger and better might come one day, and I think trainee Ateez would be so proud of what our Ateez have accomplished today :) For the next album...be prepare because it's gonna be a rollercoster of emotion. Also, you guys probably gonna catch a wintery/Chrismas feel with some of the songs and it's because it came out during december 2021. My stand out on this album are Be With You (prepare your tissue) and Better (suuuuuuuch a good song who is very underestimated in my opinion). This song and Still Here are originally on their japanese album Into the A to Z. I am not gonna say more because I don't want to spoil you but I am very looking forward to yours reaction to this album !

Alicia

Please correct me fellow ATINYs, if I'm mistaken, but I think that Hongjoong and Mingi write the lyrics for their rap parts for every song. On another note, I love Mingi's soft rap SO FREAKING MUCH 😭😭😭

Not too Late is probably one of my all time favorites of Ateez. To me, it touches on the struggles that we all face in life. It is always my go to when I am feeling down. Which may not make sense to some. But to me it gives me hope that, even though I may be having a hard time, it is not too late to turn things around. Also, for Turbulence there are a couple of Live versions that are really good and show harmonizations that you don’t see in the MV. I’d recommend checking those out. Here are the links. https://youtu.be/BycpPeGWM-c?si=SCPrQeL8pC0FveWc https://youtu.be/THPVLjEVDiA?si=zh2E-m3srJwNMjaB

I love Ateez more sentimental songs sooo much. Thanks for the reaction and the lyrics explanation. Pretty sure they were talking about themselves in this song 🥹 For Turbulence they have a lot a good versions as they sing it often but I think everyone would agree that you need to check out the it’s Live video if you haven’t already (https://youtu.be/BycpPeGWM-c?si=LksgWs2QlAt15r4W). I also love the recording from their concert (https://youtu.be/HVKjJPa4L1M?si=vPVd7yz6qh-PuOyz) and the 2021 mama performance of Turbulence + The Real (https://youtu.be/DEq6Pim09rE?si=GvQFJl6iubihP3iT start at 7:40 to get the full experience). Hope this helps 😊

Karigan

It's interesting that you made the connection to Turbulence for two reasons, the first and most obvious being that Turbulence is the very first track of the next album, and the second being that the actual album version of Not Too Late features a few seconds of the intro instrumentals of Turbulence in the very end!
