Here's our, my, reaction to OnlyOneOf's SKINZ! :D

THEY ARE SO UNDERRATED SERIOUSLY.

GOSH DANGGGGG

Please enjoy. You must enjoy. They're really good.

I totally agree with you on the multiple listens- I feel like OnlyOneOf is more a vibe than a tune- if that makes sense. The first time you listen you're like ...what's happening? and then over a couple of listens it soaks in and suddenly it's like hearing it fresh and it's so good! They are such a cool group for many reasons but I love that they make concept and dance pieces to music like this not just catchy melody music (not that there is anything wrong with that at all) because it feels so refreshing. It makes me enjoy music in a deeper way almost, on a more technical level versus something catchy and memorable that can be more casual enjoyment.

This! I love their music style, personally, but the meaning and choices they make behind their music, mvs, and performances are what make OOO really special to me. Their initial concept was sort of a what if we took kpop but make it *art*, what if kpop but *religious trauma and exhaltation*, what if kpop but *queer*. And from that they started leaning really into the idea of let's represent the underdogs, the looked down on, the gay. Their be series is perfect for that, and they carried it through skinz, libidO, even seOul drift. They're so unapologetic about intentionally choosing to bring queerness and other identity issues into the light in a way that a lot of mainstream artists even in America are leery of doing. It's gorgeous and clever and I love them for it!

I started listening to OOO when a friend said "Hey, I found this song I really like but I don't know the group, wanna listen to/ talk about this discography together?" (We both like kpop, but I don't think we have any favorite groups in common.) (I think the song was maybe picassO.) And what d'some was saying - it didn't really grab me at first listen, totally true. I threw on their discography while I was working and it just sort of faded into the background: inoffensive but just kind of musical noise. After a couple rotations though stuff started to stand out, and I'd be like - "Ohhh wait what was that?" and then "oh wait wait wait go back to that song." And now OOO is me and my friend's group in common (although I still know nothing about them).

This is a fascinating song for me; I'll admit I'm less a fan of the distorted/amelodic sound (though I can appreciate the innovation of it and how different it is to mainstream kpop), but I'm deeply compelled by the lyrics and the MV, which are very much telling a queer narrative. If you consider their more recent, even more explicitly queer work together with behind the scenes clips from other MVs from this era, it seems correct to assume that they want the audience to infer queer subtext from their videos as a default. So while, as per the video description, the lyrics can evoke a sense of "we're all people together regardless of differences" in a generic sense, the visuals apply that logic very directly to queerness through images like delicately hand-feeding each other treats and standing together in backhug/couple poses. If you look at the later MVs for their solo songs, which set up three explicit "couples" within the group, ie: Yoojung and KB, Rie and Junji, and Nine and Mill, and then use that as a retroactive template for their earlier MVs, it becomes clear that they've been demonstrating those pairings for a while now, and the Skinz MV is no exception. It's kind of breathtakingly in plain sight once you know what you're looking at, but at the same time, if you don't have the key of a queer lens, it can pass as just some guys looking nebulously intimate for music video purposes. I think there's also something potentially chewy here to unpick re: the virus imagery in the lyrics, particularly when it comes to lines like: "What do you mean what do we do / You don't have immunity to infection /And I'm talking to myself / It's gonna be the same anyway if you kiss my skin," which. [gestures broadly at PrEP/HIV literacy broadly] but also, specifically in a South Korean queer lit context, Park Sangyoung's Love in the Big City (which I just bought and am very much looking forward to reading ahead of the TV adaptation). Like, I could be wrong, but given the whole vibe of what they're doing, it doesn't feel like an out of pocket interpretation, and that potentially makes the whole thing so insanely radical that audio tastes or not I want to listen to it eight more times on principle.

I really like OnlyOneOf, for many reasons. I love their sound, which is SO different from other groups. And I'm very happy about how supportive of the LGBT+ community they are. In Korea, that is so unusual and also risky, in some ways. But I appreciate them so much.

this was one of those songs for me that took a couple listens to for me to really appreciate it, but i love this song a lot! i enjoy how it goes from very scratchy, almost uncomfortable instrumentals in the beginning to like an ethereal melodic pre-chorus. so beautiful!

i will always say, when OOO does have narratives in their music videos it always hits deep and different for me. Excited to see you watch those narratives unfold and see if you catch what they are trying to say. like the Be series as an example.

This was another one of those songs that had some very strong opinions on whether it was loved or not. I immediately thought back to Exo's "White Noise" with the melody/beat (although admittedly waaay more complex) so it was an instant hit for me. I'm just super glad to see more appreciation for this song out there - it's definitely a hidden gem.

Yep, I'm Liberty

This is one of my favorite songs! I’m so glad you enjoyed it ❤️

Woo! I requested for this one, I'm so excited! This song took me quite a few listens due to the weird mixing and sources, but I love it so much now. It's such a good representation of OOOs experimental nature. They're so unafraid to do bizarre things that somehow work so well!
