[Tier 3] SKZ - Levanter (MV + Music Bank + Gaon Chart)

SINCE you've all been waiting patiently :D

we decided to react to THREE videos in one.

And we do not regret a single thing because this song DEFINITELY needed at least three back to back listens. We got to pick up so much more this way, and appreciate the song wayyyy more by the end because we could ease ourselves from analyzing and just fanboy all we want XD. And let me tell you, the Gaon Chart version was the PERFECT video to do that.

So thank you, KACEY MILLER for the suggestion :D (or a threat...?)

XD <3 Enjoy!

Hello! I have done a little bit - life started getting crazy-busy so I'm taking a brief break. But feel free to check out what I have! I hope to be able to get back to this in the last quarter of the year. :) Blog: https://bookworm2much.wordpress.com/

y'all NEED to react to Hello Stranger, it is a ROCK masterpiece and there's kind of a running joke in the fandom that it was wasted because it was made to be the theme for a drama. Truly one of their best. Stray Kids have always been very rock/EDM heavy and they've dabbled into multiple subgenres of those two categories but nowadays they have been leaning a lot more into the EDM/Trap side, and it's very refreshing to see their old ones and how they've flourished into the artists they are today. Their old music just has such a rawness that i can't even put into words. Great reaction, as always, y'all were my first ever Patreon subscription, truly worth it!

@kwestleo and anyone else who may be interested: I am working on putting all the lore together and posting it on my blog. It will probably take a good week (or so...lol. I want to be sure i have all my ducks in a row!) But I will post a link here if/when I can!!

The storyline is connected to the Hellevator era. All title song's MV teasers and trailers are also connected and tell the story. Hellevator - SKZ was in a dystopian world; they found a Hellevator, which brought them to the beautiful pink/lavender field. But this dream-like world is a trap the system created. District 9 - The system brain-washed SKZ and tried to make everybody perfect, but SKZ found out and escaped. They broke the system dome and got into District 9. My Pace - SKZ went through the tunnel, playing around with their pace, and they didn't care about others' competition while the system kept an eye on them from all cameras. I am YOU - They found the place to be their home. They realized that they were living for each other and STAY. (BUT... “I am YOU" Teaser Video 2 has a giant mysterious bomb. Hyunjin's dead body appeared in the first scene, and I guess this led to Parrel universe in Astronaut MV.) Victory Song + Miroh - SKZ threw themselves into the maze (Miroh) and started a revolution. They won. They chased the government away. But... Side Effects (Yellow Wood) - They found that everything stayed the same. People still supported the government and the system. So they used the Hellevator and the "Key" to go to Yellow Wood, the road not taken. The parallel universe and two moons started here from their different choices. They took the hard path, traveled by themselves, and fought with their own mind. The system chasing them and made them gone insane. But in the end they rely on each other. Hyunjin left his key behind and believed in the same path as the members. Double Knot - SKZ went into the city. Now, they were confident and not afraid of how they would go anymore. Levanter - All SKZ in different universes met each other and went through the last door. The wind made them realize the real keys are in themselves. The Hellevator and other keys were the trap system created. They left the pyramid key (the key to Lavanter) and burned the ticket and Hellevator. They got out to the real world (the brown natural field) and embraced the wind. The two moons became one. --- The parallel universe is TOP (Japanese Ver.) From the path that they decided to take the bus (sent by the system). The bus brought them to TOP MV. I won't spoil it here. Astronaut is another parallel universe that has so many theories. But I think it was a sequel to "I am YOU" Teaser 2 and I am YOU performance video.

Please react to their interview at the ZACH SANG SHOW. This happended during Levanter was released! BANG CHAN explains a lot about the song, their album and the whole series and more. https://youtu.be/TPGJgpWWvJE?si=Bj7TUbkMc4wleMXI

Sandy Cai

I haven't read others' comments yet, but the whole music video has many parts that are actually from previous music videos, the choreo, the location, graphics like the moon. A beautiful ending to the whole I AM series and Cle series and amazing beginning for the OT8 SKZ !! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Sandy Cai

@Estelle S - you rock!

J.A. Moore

Also, do you want info about the Jap storyline and the mini storyline as well? Or just this main storyline? Edit: I can't figure out how to message on here... do you know how?

Estelle S

Absolutely!!! I'd be honored!! ...I'll try to figure out how to do so lol.😅😁

Estelle S

I would Love for you to message me the rest of the lore up to where the current discography is (rock star). This has been so fascinating.

Kwestleo

Levanter is a song I can listen to in any language and love (I think they released it in Korean, English & Japanese and all versions are on my favourites playlist). This is one of those songs that just grows on me more and more with time. It also made me sit up and realise Lee Know was one of my favourite vocalists- and his vocal talents have grown so much from this point to now as well! I love when SKZ show off that they can do beautiful vocals and emotional performances as well as high energy fierce performances.

Ixaala

Lore posted if you're interested. :)

Estelle S

I just realized! Clè: Levanter album is where Skz seem to say, this is it, we're doing our own thing and following our own path. And what, my friends, comes after Levanter? GOD'S MENU!! THE song that helped define their Mala sound and really, imo, solidified who Stray Kids are musically. Ah! So cool!!! Also, a side note from Jessica also might be of interest: God's Menu concept possibly inspired by Alchemistry by 3racha. Haven't looked it up myself yet but thought I would mention it since others may have been around since ore-debut. ☺️

Estelle S

OH! and a side comment about Double Knot - if you're going in order of MV releases, it comes after Side Effects and before Levanter - I think it's the perspective of the rebel SKZ and they're tightening their laces to continue on this path and then Levanter comes, some things change and they have to really decide who they are and where they're going.

Estelle S

Last note for now: Throughout this thread of the storyline, and through their songs as well starting from District 9, SKZ are inviting all the stray kids from around the world to their District so be a part of it and so that we can be ourselves as well. So many songs reference this: Haven, You can STAY, ofc District 9, I am YOU, and My Pace as well as others that seem to skirt around it such as, Placebo, Broken Compass, My Side, For You, and ...the other mixtape I forgot the rename of... but you guys know what I mean. This all feels like a culmination in Levanter, in a way, because you could interpret this song as speaking to oneself: I have to let go of who I thought I was or who I thought I should be and be myself.

Estelle S

Okay, note on the Levanter wind: the book The Alchemist also seems to use this wind as a symbol of the violent ability to destroy, as well as interconnectedness and change. So in a sense, SKZ could also be going AGAINST the wind and resisting destruction and embracing interconnectedness and change.

Estelle S

Okay, for a note on I.N: RM calls him "the Oracle" as he knows that he is in the wrong universe and with the wrong set of SKZ. Jessica calls him "the Glitch" as he is the only one who knows what's going on and is struggling between comfort and growth. I think both of these opinions can be reconciled in that they both are a struggle between comfort and growth. Whether I.N is in the wrong universes or he's just conscious of both worlds, he has to reconcile this knowledge within himself, accept it, and continue onwards towards growth and goals - which is what I think of when I watch him look back at the end of Levanter and decide to "let go", as he sings, and move forward with SKZ.

Estelle S

Now, this is the point you both are at in the Lore. I know you guys have reacted to various other songs, but I don't want to overload you with information so I'm going to stop here for now. I will also reread what I've sent so far and make notes below as needed for clarification.

Estelle S

Some specific things to note (from RM) going from Side Effects to Levanter: - Levanter choreo picks up where the Side Effects MV left off, with SKZ raising Hyunjin up from the ground (where he was dreaming possibly of Astronaut MV?). Another obvious reference to Side Effects in Levanter is Felix and Hyunjin's neck-snapping choreo restructured as a comforting gesture instead. In RM's words: "Levanter is the first really noticeable turning-point, end-of-the-era video and incorporates multiple references, of various forms, to previous songs and videos. It's an emotional video for many reasons, but one of them is that it brings up all these mentions of other moments that happened up to that point, then reframes them in the transformative setting of Levanter.....the confusion and chaos of Side Effects has now been replaced with some of the most connected and supportive choreo in SKZ's collection. The building turmoil of the previous songs turns into an entire song of comfort and shared strength."

Estelle S

Now, at this point, there is also further building blocks on this Lore as some of them (or all of them to some extent) have gotten powers - I.N is the most obvious in the MVs from this era as he clearly knows what's going on and can't or won't say anything to the others. Hyunjin seems to suspect something is off but can't quite put his finger on what. Felix as well seems to be developing powers of some sort as the floating Broken Compass (song reference!) in the MV seems to elude to.

Estelle S

Part 2: During the 2nd trilogy of albums, Skz find themselves in parallel universes, one where the going is easy and laid out for them with The System and one where they have chosen the Road Not Taken and have gone into the Maze on their own. Notices (as Jessica points out) that there are only a Cl'e 1 and 2 and not a Cl'e 3 - by the time we get to Levanter, SKZ have realized that they don't need a "cl'e" (key) but they themselves are the key to their own dreams and aspirations and goals. "Levanter" is translated as the Mediterranean wind and, as I saw in some comments referencing the book The Alchemist, it is used in that book as a way of describing change. (Reference to the Winds of Change song from way back as well? :) ) So, in Levanter, we see that Skz have made a choice and are changing directions with the wind - they have decided not to rebel, not to follow The System, but to go their own way and forge their own path.

Estelle S

Part 1: starting from the beginning, there are are two sets of SKZ - one who took the easy road, the way The System in District 9 told them to do everything; and one who took the Hellevator to the wilds to go their own way. Their first trilogy of albums - I am NOT., I am WHO?, I am YOU! - are them questioning themselves and figuring out who they are and figuring out which direction to go: do they keep going with The System or do they rebel and go on their own path.

Estelle S

Some notes from RM: "Whenever you see two moons, keys, a purplish field, an elevator or elevator booth/doors, a cityscape or a city in the sky, rooftops, a bus, a slightly creepy dude with a tattoo on his hand, an eagle, goblin fire, or red and blue pairing or conflicting (in moons, in eye contacts, in laser beams, etc), it's part of the main storyline (which itself involves two sets of the members, alive in parallel universes)." "The main Korean storyline has parallel universes/timelines, and a different version of SKZ is in each. Except I.N, who got switched during Astronaut (so the two versions of him are with the wrong two versions of SKZ)."

Estelle S

Prelude: firstly, there are multiple storylines happening at once - the main one is in their main Korean title tracks and some B-sides with two universes happening simultaneously. The Japanese storyline is also a parallel universe which is a retelling or similar storyline to the K tracks. The last one is a mini storyline that is mostly from Noeasy era and continued in Skzflix & the Leave unveil track. To keep this as uncomplicated as possible, I'm going to leave the 2nd and 3rd storylines largely untouched in this synopsis. But don't worry! I'll fill you in whenever you say go!! I LOVE talking SKZ lore to anyone and everyone!! :D

Estelle S

Alright, here we go on Skz lore for anyone interested! Bare in mind this is a mash up of two lovely people on YT comments: @RM_formerlyjustRMbutYTsucks (YT) and @123racha_gs (Insta/Twitter) / @jessicabadere530 (YT). (Edit: Plus some of my own thoughts, I realize now lol)

Estelle S

Good points! I'll try to drop some Skz lore on a new comment so its further down and others can see it. :) thanks for encouraging me to do so!! I will!! I think I started watching the interview at one point and cringed out of secondhand embarrassment on how the intervers spoke and stuff. But I'll watch for the performance!!!

Estelle S

I think it will this allows for some pretty long comments and you can always break it up into parts! Also, definitely watch that live performance! The interview wasn't so great but the performance was beautiful!

Kiki Meowzilla

“Shoot the fireworks! Drop the flowers! Shoot everything!” Exactly that Han-C!I love that performance, esp Bang Chan and Hyunjin’s intro. Gorgeous. I honestly don’t know shit about SKZ lore I never clock any of the stuff. Levanter is beautiful and will always be special because it’s the birth of OT8 at a time when they weren’t sure what would happen after Woojin’s departure. Personally, I feel like they were forced to grow so much in their craft as a result and I’m grateful. But it’s def a bittersweet for them to look back on.

Pandasnopunk

levanter on my one month as a sausage ahhh!!! i will admit that skzlore is so frustrating to me because we have no solid conclusion to what is going on lol

kimbaely vang

I totally agree about the story telling comment. It's even more noticeable to me when I look at their dance practice videos. In the older ones, the choreo has more creativity. I miss it.

J.A. Moore

I am so glad you did all three.

Tracey Okeby Lucan

OOOOO, I haven't seen the live English version! Thank you! And yes!! You're welcome!! Months ago, i asked for lore on YT and a lovely Stay wrote a shortened version of his thesis notes (his words) and it is a lovely synopsis. I'd love to share in these comments, but I'm afraid the length wouldn't be allowed. :/

Estelle S

No, I agree. I was wondering why S-Class and LALALALA choreo didn't hit the same... it still hits! But you're right, there's not as much grace to it and, I think I'd add, not as much story telling - though I might just be missing it

Estelle S

Agreed!

Estelle S

Please listen to the English version of Levanter as well.

김수미

QUEEN!!!!!! I would give limbs, organs and my soul to see this live 😭😭😭 Ahhh SKZ lore.....when we figure it out we'll let you know. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Nova

I recommend watching this after the Levander album, like we did. It was the segue between Levanter and Go Live. But definitely watch it. It's pretty important, not just to the lore, but about them musically.

Star Dust

Queen Levanter!!!!

Linq1

I'd recommend listening to Chan's wrap-up explanation for the lore. Stray Kids : Prequel (Highlight Reel). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pFLO3g6CSg&list=PL9K3xwFkFqWEUOC39i3GD1mio7QMGveuU It doesn't go into like, all the nuances, but gives a nice overview from Hellevator/District 9 all the way through Levanter and into the start of God's Menu. From what I know...They had to make a choice in Side Effects, they chose to take the Road Not Taken, but then regretted it. Levanter is the wind that blew that brought them back to themselves (like you lost who you were and needed a slap to bring you back to awareness). In Side Effects, they went to an alternate world. In Levanter, they leave that alternate world (the meadow colors are very otherworldly at the beginning and at the end they change into a normal meadow) and come back to the normal world. There's a bit more of lore (also shown in Astronaut) of how the original I.N is somehow lost and the alternate I.N ends up coming back with the boys instead. I.N being different from the others is also showcased in the trailer for Thunderous. Most of the lore is in the trailers, and sometimes sprinkled in the MVs (Miroh, Side Effects, Levanter, and Astronaut had a lot).

Selande

Took me way too long to notice Seungmin wasn't in the last video. Is that when he'd hurt his back?? Still a breathtaking performance. Hadn't seen either live versions before so it was a great treat. Levanter is such a beautiful song <3

Purr-Kim

I second everyone that has mentioned the English version, it is a MUST!!! There is also a live performance of the English version, where they did great - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxGZvUCB-jY

Kiki Meowzilla

I came looking for someone to provide the lore before I took on the task of writing it out. Thank you for doing it, this era was so lore heavy that it really is tedious to get it all organized! Thanks again, and I second that the English version is a MUST!!! There is also a live performance of the English version, where they did great - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxGZvUCB-jY

Kiki Meowzilla

As someone mentioned earlier, the gaon chart performance references the Robert Frost poem “The Road Not Taken”, which mentions the “yellow wood” of Cle: Yellow Wood. That poem is why the album is called yellow wood and why the first song is called road not taken.

evehsu

Queen Levanter!!!!!!!!!

Naj.naaj

Also......am I the only one who misses their early, simpler choreography? Sometimes with their latest songs / albums, I feel like the choreo is just GO GO GO HARD HARD HARD without much grace and variety to it. Just my opinion, though.

J.A. Moore

I didn’t lead you astray with this particular performance. It is one of my very favorite skz performances. And that’s saying something.

Kacey Miller

As of 2022, the Gaon Chart Music Awards are now called the Circle Chart Music Awards, and it's a major annual awards show presented by KOMCA (Korea Music Content Association).

J.A. Moore

I'd never seen the Gaon performance before - it's incredible! And at the same time, I'm kicking myself for never having realized before that Cle: Yellow Wood is a reference to the Robert Frost poem. I know that poem by heart, and yet I didn't make the connection until Felix recited part of it during the intro!

sysrae

The way this song gives me chills every time. I STILL don't know much about the lore. But i know this time was obviously rough for the boys. But they sound amazing. They all look amazing in that black and white. This is Seungmin's song but its also very much Lee Know's song. His falsetto was everything. YEEESSSS THIS IS THE VIDEO THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS. THIS PERFORMANCE IS STUNNING!!! you guys are saying its so good but y'all ain't seen nothing yet. Yeeesssssss the fireworks, the bling bling paper, everything Han. This performance was SO STINKING FLAWLESS. AMAZING! TOP TIER PERFORMANCE. Unfortunately I do not know the lore so i cannot help you there. Gaon Chart was perfection. They were able to do all that bcuz of practice, hard work, and also natural talent.

Kwestleo

I'm really hoping you react to the English version of Levanter too! The lyrics are so beautifully translated and somehow I think it makes the song so beautiful in such a different way - it hits really hard. This is my official formal request!

anushkakusum

This is actually so fascinating that Levanter's story has so many parallels to the book. Man, I've been putting off reading this book for so long, but now I really need to read it.

s.x.o.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0IIivHlROg&t=167s

Eileen

It also makes me so proud of Seungmin since this was his first album as the main vocalist.

Jenni Heath

very interesting! well baram (the korean title) means wind so i thought they were going with that definition mostly, but maybe could be both! i think they used a lot of wind/air motifs surrounding these promotions, and in the highlight reel they specifically referred to levanter as "the wind blew"

aicrylic (aimee)

It breaks my heart every time they talk about this song and this era. You can tell it still bothers them because this is their first MV and performance as a group of 8. I think that is why you can feel their emotions in the MV and performances even more than normal.

Jenni Heath

So I don't really know much about their lore and the story behind Levanter, but the way I see it is that the collision of the two moons represents a kind of an end to their journey until Levanter (i.e. they lost themselves (psychologically speaking) while training to become idols and now after much struggle they find themselves again); but then the door represents a new beginning for something even greater yet unknown. (That's only my interpretation, though. So it could be totally wrong) Also, there's an english version of this song (in my opinion their best english version, 'cause the original lyrics aren't "lost" and you can hear the lyrics very clearly), so it'd be nice if you reacted to that as well. Other than that, LOVED your reaction!!!

s.x.o.

To begin answering your questions about lore, I should first say that the book ‘The Alchemist’ has been a major influence in this album, especially Levanter. Levanter is defined as being a strong easterly wind in the Mediterranean region. The Levanter in the book is also a powerful wind that symbolizes change, renewal, transformation. Therefore the song itself also represents a certain change Stray Kids is facing. "The Alchemist", it is a spiritual story of a boy/ a young shepherd who sells all of his belongings to pursue his dreams. As he main character of the Alchemist feels the Levanter, he decides to go on a journey of self discovery. In the same way our guys talk about letting go of the past, embracing one’s self and their journey to freedom (both from the maze they were traveling since Miroh and from the constraints of society). Their goal up to this point was to escape the maze, and I believe that maze was beginning to define them, so by letting IT go (destroying the elevator, the ticket to the new world) they are freeing themselves and can move forward as individuals. The pyramid also gave me pause when I first saw the video. But going back to the Alchemist, that novel shows the journey of a shepherd who dreams about a treasure hidden under the pyramid of Giza. An Alchemist convinced him to go on a journey an fulfill his destiny (self discovery). He leaves on his journey as soon as the Levanter rises, but when he gets to the pyramid he realizes there was no treasure, the journey up to the pyramid was the treasure. So the pyramid collapse in the MV, to me means that it was part of the world they are letting go in order to move forward. The pyramid is not the goal anymore, the journey to reach it was. Also, at the end of the video, I tend to think they are back in the Hellevator field, but as changed individuals. Yet another thing, Felix is holding a broken compass. I don't know if you remember the lyrics Felix sang in Double Knot, but the translation goes like this: "Blank-sided dice, no-sided coin, wherever it points Now it doesn't matter 'cause I'm following the broken compass in the void" The compass is significant for SKZ and present in other songs as well and you've already listened to 3Racha's Broken Compass, turned into Mixtape#4 in the Cle1: Miroh Album. That song uses the metaphor of a broken compass to emphasize the importance of pursuing ones dreams without comparing yourself to others. Their light stick is also a compass without direction. I'm not good with all the clone theories and alternate universes LOL, but I'm a book geek, and I was intrigued by the parallels with the book. For more info on their story you should watch the Stray Kids:Prequel (Highlight Reel). It will provide more insight into their story and it also introduces the next album GO LIVE! I hope I made sense, Levanter is pretty much the conclusion of the early SKZ discography, where they wondered about trying to find themselvesby experimenting different unravelled paths.

ElleV

I'm sure lore will be more useful, but in french (and I'm assuming they're using the french word since clé is french), levanter means to lift or rise - most common usage I can think of is "soleil levant" - rising sun which has this tangential idea of orienté au levant, which literally translates to "oriented to the rising [sun]" which as a pre-debut thing is pretty fun. Not sure any of that is relevant/useful but is where my mind went when I first heard this song. Oh - there's also an english usage but it refers to a strong wind coming from the Mediterranean.

Quiet Type

You are forgiven

Inna

this is so interesting to me because i know once you go back and watch all the album intros you will see their intention and thought behind songs like levanter especially, at the moment it is like basic interpretation based on lyrics and the emotion the song invokes, even how the song is made like chord progression, but skz really have so many stories to tell in their songs you might not pick out in one or two listens or even semi picking up lyrics here and there. also, if you're willing to do an extra vid, the english version of levanter is in my opinion, the best english version of a k-pop song because the translation does not feel like it loses any of the original gravitas ALSO ALSO (i'll comment this again nearing the end of your listen of this album) but you definitely need to watch this video, highlight reel, before moving on to go live https://youtu.be/9pFLO3g6CSg?si=VPwB5eBSljGvVh8P

aicrylic (aimee)

I completely forgot that you guys haven't even seen the Levanter MV yet. And if the gaon chart version is the one that I'm thinking of i am EXCITED to see your reaction bcuz that performance was STUNNING

Kwestleo

Their lore is so crazy even after someone explaining it to me I still don’t know what’s going on so I’ll leave the exposing to someone else 😭😭 it spans across most (if not all) of their music videos im pretty sure and anytime the members get asked about it they don’t know what to say either lmaoo

mysterious_ky

when this song first came out it was a pretty depressing time to be a stay, at least in my opinion and so i really didnt give it the love it deserved at the time, its safe to say now , this song is one of the most BEAUTIFUL kpop songs and i fall in love with it every time, more and more and more

AXXIDMOUSE

Never clicked so fast to a reaction! So excited! Thank you

Mariya Fae

The way I gasped and didn't breathe for a whole minute when I saw this. AHHH IM SO EXCITED! Edit: Chills - CHILLS. I love this song so much. It was a sad time for Skz and Stay (I wasn't a Stay at the time but I've read about it), but this song is/was timely and beautiful and heartbreaking. The English version is also just as good (in my opinion)! Also, YES this is such a lore-heavy MV! I'm compiling what I know from other Stays and putting it together for you. I'm hoping to get it to you tonight!! :) Stay tuned ! :)

Estelle S

!!!!!!!!! Ok, this was everything I hoped for. I'm so glad uou did the 3 back to back, and THANK YOU to however sent the link to the gain version! I think I'd seen clips from that on tiktok but couldn't find the whole thing, that was perfect! Im so happy we finally got the Levanter reaction. It really does keep growing on you. First it's a nice song, but the more you listen the better it gets. Thank you!

Sam w

Dance practice... It is waiting for you 💕

Kseniya

Omg so excited every time you guys post a skz reaction!
