Early Access: ATEEZ - Outlaw Album Full Review

Comments

Yes - and as we say in that comment and others similar to it, it's insane how ATEEZ connect their album while also maintaining thematic integrity within album :') they're so good. We cannot wait for their full album in December - it's comin earlier than we personally expected so we're even more excited!

Oh their album connection is mind blowing - to think that their intricacies extend beyond a single album is just crazy :0... But either way, happy to hear you enjoyed our fanboying half analysis half shouting video XD we did have fun with it and got to talk more about things, although we did it in a single listen and kept it simple so it wasn't THAT in depth. Thank you for the fun comment :D Let's go crazy once the new album drops!!

FACTS! haha but also, we didn't know that Seonghwa was supposed to be a rapper at first :0 that's so cool

Someone I think mentioned it, but when you listen to the first World album, the way they laid out the tracks make so much more sense, this being the middle album. They end Movement with New World (which legit is so freaking powerful and hopeful, it makes you want to cry) so starting Outlaw album with This World, you realize it’s not as bright and hopeful as you want it to be (mood wise). I think when you guys finally listen to the first movement album and then listen to this one, the flows of the tracks make so much more sense. I can’t wait to see what we get with full length album in December. Plus, they finished the last two series with an epilogue album teasing the next series…so in theory, we have two more albums to wrap up this series. It’s their darkest, most haunting series yet and I’m living for it. But another thing to note is the lyrics.. they mention the same words over and over again through all the series which also ties them together. They’re honestly musical geniuses.

What I find super interesting is looking at Outlaw as it sits in conversation with Movement. Listening to them back to back, the way 'New World' moves into 'This World' makes the song order of outlaw really stick as a middle part of a story which is so, so cool. Ateez title track MVs almost always (I think the only exception is The Real?) hint ahead to albums of the future. (The end of the Fireworks MV is the melody of The Real, the end of the Guerilla MV is the halazia instrumental). This creates an arc between albums from the very beginning, which--from a music-narrative overlap point of view--is absolutely delicious. The World arc goes above and beyond, too. The way Outlaw is a direct continuation of Movement!! I'm super curious about how Will will (ha) fit into this. I'm really happy that you made a summary review of Outlaw, actually. Your thoughts on it were super interesting to hear beyond the initial reactions. The less... smacked-in-the-face (understandable), collected thoughts were really insightful. (Also, your enthusiasm for ateez's music production shenanigans are always a treat to listen to :)) I found it interesting (also validating lol) how much the dark tone and the classical music/operatic elements stood out to you in Outlaw. To my ears, the 'World' arc--musically, narratively and in sheer theatrical spectacle, like, they turned the knob off the Stage Drama slider with outlaw for sure--carries so much resonance with goth/symphonic metal albums of the 2000s-2010s. I'm specifically thinking about some Epica albums and Nightwish's 'Imaginareum' here. I can't be the only one who feels the echoes here! Considering that ateez shares a production team overlap with Dreamcatcher (k-rock adjacent girl group. they're awesome!!), this cannot be a coincidence. @ edenary, olunder, leez, etc; which one of you was the goth metal teenager bc I see you!! Thank you for the great content as always, looking forward to finding out what fresh hell is coming for us in December together 🌱

I LOVE how much shine they gave yeosangs voice in this album. Along with Seonghwas rap, when I learned he was originally going to be a rappper it makes his raps so much hotter lol. I can't wait to see what they do next! Dec. 1st!

Loved this so much.. this album was just incredible and there's truly so much to unpack. Also yes! Ateez is having a comeback on December 1st!! But.. it's actually going to be a full album instead of a mini album! Their second ever full album. I am beyond excited.

You should go back and listen to Paradigm and then listen to Wake Up. They are connected lyrically and actually musically, they use the same motifs. It's really, really cool.
