[Tier 3] ATEEZ - Thank U (Lyrics + Live Band Video)

Can't believe we're getting another awesome song about, well, this time, Seonghwa instead of Atinys in this one album.

We did see right after reacting to this that HJ didn't tell Seonghwa about the inspiration behind the lyrics up until the point of recording, but please feel free to elaborate to let us know (if you know) (lee know) when Seonghwa DID find out, and other background info about why HJ wrote this for him in the first place, etc.!

Otherwise, ENJOY <3 :D

Comments

Oh we often put out polls for that - not many votes for girl groups we recall, but we DO react to XG and other songs from them we haven't reacted to ARE coming :D So for that, you are good to go!

Seonghwa is basically the Mom of the group, in the way that he cares for the members, and helps Hongjoong carry the load of his Captaincy.

This one really speaks to the relationships between members and within the group as a whole. While there are combinations of every member, and they often have their own ship names (WooSan being most popular, but also Matz (mathyungs) for the 98-liners, YunGi, etc.), the fact that there IS a name for most pairings/groupings says a lot about the interactions. It's not _just_ WooSan out there, it's everyone with someone else, and the interactions feel and look different, which is awesome. Seeing them do this band style is underrated, and that entire performance grouping was exceptional, as was Hong Joong's busking session and some of the other things they've done (see: Leave the Door Open cover). Because they're such performance beasts, their vocals can often be underrated or downgraded on the whole. It makes me sad because they're so incredibly good, and truly all-arounders.

I loveeeeee the It's Live for Thank You, it's one of my fave ones they have ever done! I hope after you guys catch up with their discography you can watch more live performances and dance practices too. ATEEZ live just really hits differently.

OH! and I found a binaural comparison video someone actually did! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=St2GDGCSbQk

I love the live version the best. 💙💙💙

I love this song. I love the meaning behind it. One of these days I pray that the lyric videos will be able to tell the difference between San and WooYoung. Lol. And of course I’m your friend. Every once in awhile someone amazing walks into your life. Here I am. You’re welcome. 😁😂

Holy crap. I can see why it's under fire. I haven't played them next to each other for a true comparison, and certainly don't have the software to let me pick apart each track... BUT... this does sound like Guerrilla, it's way too close for comfort so hopefully it's being looked at by KQ already. That said, guys please do take a look, because regardless of what KQ does I would also love to know your thoughts on it.

Ateez always turn even the smallest performance into a concert, they truly deserve the title of best performer. Another comment already recommended it, but I'd strongly suggest watching the two coin karaoke episodes they have just to see how much they can hype up a room. It's incredibly fun. Also the concert version of Thank U is so sweet too. The members always go between singing the lyrics at each other and the crowd. How much they genuinely care for each other is definitely one of the biggest reasons so many people are attracted to their dynamics. While Seonghwa and Hongjoong are the same age, the boys always joke that Hongjoong is only good at being a celebrity while Seonghwa actually takes care of everything else. Hongjoong has always struggled with expressing gratitude and love, despite how fond he is of his members, which is why he wrote his verse with Seonghwa in mind. A similar look into his psyche was the pre-debut show where he worked on their 'From' song in the parking lot during the night so as not to disturb them and cried because of all the lyrics the kids wrote. He's really a big softie :D To add on to another comment about their friendship dynamics and jealousy, one of my favorite things about them is that you can tell they're really genuine about all of this. While other groups will share about conflicts they've had years after they were resolved, there are times when Ateez will air out and resolve conflicts on live streams - they really don't hold back with that stuff haha. Or recently when they were all apart for the holidays and Hongjoong mentioned on a live that he missed the members while doing his Paris fashion week stuff, then Mingi called him pretentious for it :D I second that watching some Ateez variety shows will be fun, they're very fun kids with really fun dynamics.

Unrelated to ateez, but do you guys have a form or something where you take any requests? I don’t think you guys listen to girl groups (might be wrong) but I think you guys would love XG and would love for you guys to react to them.

Semi-related but also slightly unrelated to this video a few days ago a song was released by an artist that goes by the name 3WICH called Kicking Your Face for a show in Taiwan called Music Maker they’ve come under fire especially by Atiny as it sound remarkably similar to Ateez’s Guerilla I think it would be really cool to have you guys listen to the song and compare it to Guerilla because KQ has not filed copyright infringement claims against the composer yet and if you think 3WICH did plagiarize it or not here’s a link to the song if you do https://youtu.be/cFLjr-lQ15A?si=ycJrD8XjJ--Q9OMc

I’m glad you are here to put it all down in a cohesive manner. I just rambled my comment off. So thank you. I’m glad you are here. 🖤

So Momma Hwa and HongJoong are the parents. HJ as captain, keeps them all in line the best he can but he’s pretty much the disciplinarian of the group. Seonghwa mothers. He made sure everyone was eating, was taking care of themselves, was there when they needed someone. Especially HongJoong. Seonghwa is actually the oldest in the group, being 7 months older than HJ. The next 5 members are all 99’ babies and Jongho the youngest born in 00’ (to answer the age question). HJ isn’t one for expressing his feelings and is pretty much allergic to skinship. This was his way of saying everything he couldn’t to Seonghwa for the support momma Hwa gave him (and them). I honestly can’t remember if Seonghwa knew about it before hand. I can’t remember if it was mentioned somewhere or not. But at this point, each member considers it a gift to each other. Concert footage of this song live gets emotional. If you watch any of their content, you’ll be able to see how deep their bonds go. One of the other comments touches on their fated friendships and how Ateez was just meant to be. The fact that they are just this wild and chaotic family is one of the reasons I love them. I can’t wait for you to check out some of that content. You’ll see what we’re saying. Thank you for reacting to this song and especially for looking at the live performance.🖤

YES PLEASE!!! Particularly the It's Live version of Turbulence, it is SPECTACULAR!

Yes, Seongwa and Hongjoong are the same age, the two eldest members of the group. They call themselves "Matz", to distinguish themselves from the 99ers, who are ...everyone else except Jongho :P. Seonghwa was established very early on, by Ateez themselves, as the nurturing mother of the group who looks after Hongjoong and the dorm and Hongjoong as the reserved father who lectures them, tries to keep them in line, and doesn't like emotional stuff or hugs. (We will recommend videos, don't worry). Despite this, Seonghwa is an adopted 99-er, and causes just as much chaos as them when he doesn't feel like he needs to watch the other members. In which case Yunho (responsible oldest son) keeps an eye on things, or Jongho bellows the rest of them into submission. Which is also hilarious. You really do need to start watching some Ateez Variety content! (May I recommend you start with their 2 Backstage Karaoke episodes? They produced so much content backstage it was expanded into a second episode, and they are only singing covers so it won't spoil you for anything). This wonderful song is now considered by all the members as a gift to each other, and they always sing it to each other onstage with great joy, while Atiny sings it to them from the audience. And there are often tears, it can get very emotional, like during the first concerts after covid. There are many long standing friendships and also "destined" friendships in Ateez (Wooyoung and Yeosang were friends before joining KQ, and Wooyoung followed Yeosang to KQ specifically so they could debut together, Mingi and Yunho have been friends since high school, and Hongjoong was the inspiration behind Seonghwa not dropping out as a trainee...even though neither knew who the other was until later. San and Wooyoung have matching friendship tattoos)...everyone pairs regularly with everyone in specific, wonderful ways. Hongjoong did an interview where he said they were a very jealous group, because they all like each other so much they always feel left out and hurt when they do things without each other, but the people hanging out are always changing, it's never the same pairs. So they are jealous over each other, and also very jealous about Atiny. There was even a whole debate over which level of paying attention to other idols was acceptable for Atiny...and Yeosang compared it to Atiny having an affair if they went to someone else's concert (It was as hilarious and argumentative as you are now imagining, except louder). They've calmed down a little with age, but not as much as you would think. It is this very close friendship dynamic that makes everyone adore them so. And the bickering. The endless, endless chaotic bickering :P

J

I guess HJ talked about it on Idol Radio. Here’s a feed of what he was saying about it. HJ is so thoughtful of his other members. The next song “Sunrise” is another emotional one and one of my favorites. What I love about ATEEZ’s more “ballad” songs is how uplifting they are. They only get better. The Fever Series has some really beautiful ones. https://x.com/s2lomatzve/status/1638539464694976512?s=46&t=4vZsnbWf4TO7ylCBvoBHvg

I meant the Korean version. I keep forgetting that there's a Japanese version

Eva Minster

Technically "New World" is from The World ep 1: Movement, not the paradigm album, unless you were at one of the Japanese shows and got the J version of the song, but it was initially released on the Movement album.

elvenmagick

In the concert I went to, Thank U wasn't in the set list. All the chill songs were sort of the middle. They opened with New World (a song on the paradigm album) and literally close the concert with The Real. Said version being way more powerful than the Kingdom version.

Yeosangs Chicken Leg 🍗

I love this song. It's so sweet.

You should check out the whole It's Live set they did, they did like 4 or 5 songs with them that day, I think there is a full 45min video of it on the channel somewhere. Watching the concert videos of this song always gives me the happy feels! Ateez is such a family, their collective vibe when they sing this song with(at) each other never fails to make me smile.
