[Tier 3] SKZ - Get Cool (MV + Performance)

This song made us cool.

Also, tons of wordplay so pay attention :D!

It's funny that both Hero's Soup AND Get Cool back to back had so much wordplay involved, but hey, we love dissecting Korean for you all so it's a win-win situation!

Hope you all enjoy, and see you in the street version of N/S! :D:D:D SO EXCITED

Fun fact in french we use "dog" too but more for negative things like "avoir un mal de chien" litteraly " to have a dog's pain" so "to have a big big pain" or "un temps de chien" "a dog's weather" "a really bad weather" Voilà :)

Also lets just discuss Hanji fully SLAYING his live rapping even in something as chill as the dance practice video. we truly stan the ace of all aces

This song is such a vibe!! i feel like people often underestimate the brilliance of this song because it sounds so upbeat and young and fun, but as you said, the wordplay, the context, its all incredible! Not to mention the performance haha! Im so thankful to you both for always explaining the wordplay to us and for helping us IStays understand the songs better! <3

Here to second the MAMA version of Victory Song. That is one of my favourite SKZ stages of all time!

Ohhh we're going to have so much fun with the 꼰대 song aren't we hahaha we can already tell

Oh we love this detail XD

@Sam W I mean, same! I wish I spoke Korean too to understand all those hidden meanings. I just know of Gone Days because I remember that when it came out many people talked about the meaning of the song. Here a better explanation I found online: “Gone Days,”, sees Stray Kids frustrated. The title plays on the similar sound of “gone days” and 꼰대 (kkondae), which means old, nosy, bossy people. The members reflect annoyance of the younger generation in the chorus as they sing, “This is the new generation, go away.” They know that life has changed dramatically since the era of youth of the boomer generation, and they honestly just want to be left alone.

+1 for MAMA 2020 Victory Song Performance. Absolutely epic for several different reasons. That was the year they weren’t nominated for anything. THE year of God’s Menu. Imagine.

Kristin

In the beginning of the MV I noticed Seungmin (puppy) sitting with a lot of honey around him, and then a bit later your explanation…🐕🍯. The MV had the 개 꿀 hidden in plain sight 😁

Inge Sahuleka

I had no idea kkondae was a thing… I thought it was just gone day. That adds so much… man, I’m so mad I don’t speak Korean!

I actually love it when y'all explain the Korean wordplay that the kids have in their songs since it truly can get lost in translation, it's so cool finding out something more about it! Can't wait for N/S and 0325 🤩 thank you!!!

Alessandra

Your analysis was awsome! I didn't know about the double meaning of Get Cool, even having heard the song 1000 times, so thank you for the cool analysis! This worldplay reminds me a lot of another SKZ song "Mixtape: Gone Days" where the whole song talks about the 꼰대 (kkondae), the old, nosy, bossy boomer. I know you'll react to the Mixtapes sometimes in the future, but I can't wait for you to react to Gone Days and see if there is any parallelism with Get Cool! Also, for the next SKZ album, I would definitely recommend reacting to: - Miroh: MV + Kingdom ep.1 performance (you already watched it, but it would be nice to see how they changed the song for Kingdom) - Victory Song: Performance Video (there isn't a MV) + Victory song performance from MAMA 2020. That's their most EPIC performance EVER, including dozens of gladiators, and you guys shouldn't miss out!

I love all stray kids songs but I often find myself thinking … Man, Get Cool is so f*ing good and I feel bad that a lot of the wordplay is lost to the greater public. I’ve watched other reactors just kind of be like oh this cute.

Martha Ferguson

Thank you for the wordplay explanation! Also, the point you made about the fried chicken drumsticks is doubly apt here, because this is literally what Chan does - the drumsticks are his favourite, but he almost never eats them himself, because he gives them to the other members instead.

This song is one of the things that make my immediately happy and I.N’s smile is like icing the cake. I love seeing you feel the same way and for the same reasons. Our kids! P.s. 0325 is a special day.

Such a wholesome reaction, loved it!! You guys really get it :') that happiness is what I feel while listening to many of skz songs and I'm so grateful for it, totally mood makers, and yeah they're just adorable and lovable. And now here comes N/S !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I swear we're just hyping it so much haha I bet you have no idea what it is about 😆

Mara

Yeah, again I am so thankful for your explanations which enhance the enjoyment of SKZs songs! Please continue! Not speaking Korean I feel like missing out on much of the fun they pour into their songs. I am not sure if Bang Chan is the lone source of the word play and intelligence, I suspect Han brings in a lot and Chanbin as well, though his English is not as good as Hans. Anyway, most probably they throw around balls between each other and are masters at free association.

Ideosycrat

Thank you again for adding context to the word play. This song also just makes me happy when I listen to it, they are all so cute! Loved your reaction!

Waaa! I’m so glad you watched a performance of this! I was initially thinking of one of their comeback stages (IN has his hair in a little ponytail on top of his head that is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen), but the dance practice does such a good job showing the choreo and their ridiculous cuteness! When you talked about feeling like a proud parent, that’s exactly the feeling I get from this. It just makes me so happy, and seeing how much fun they’re having makes this about 1000000x better. I knew about the honey reference, but I missed the slang connection! Another song where I’m so glad native Korean speakers can translate some of the wordplay that gets lost in translation! Thanks for a great reaction, this made my day!
