Geometric Series and Geometric Sequences

This algebra video tutorial provides a basic introduction into geometric series and geometric sequences.  It explains how to calculate the common ratio of a geometric sequence and how to determine the nth term of a geometric sequence.  It explains how to write a general equation for a  geometric series using a simple formula and how to calculate the partial sum of a geometric series as well as the infinite sum if the geometric series converges.  if it diverges, the sum cannot be calculated.  This video also highlights the difference between the arithmetic mean and the geometric mean.  This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems.

Problem 21: Inflation is the rate of increase in prices over a given period of time. The present value of dollars decreases, not increases over time. Purchasing power decreases with inflation. A = P(1 + R)**t $10,000 = P (1 - .03)**t = P (0.97)**10 = 0.7374 P = present value = $10,000 / 0.7374 = $13,561

Problem 17: I think the bacteria count after 24 hours should be: 800 ( 8 ** (24 - 1)) because the 1st period ended with 800 bacteria followed by 23 more periods. OR 100 (2 ** 72) because the 0th period ended with 100 bacteria followed by 72 more periods. = 472,236,648,286,964,521,369,600
