Someone asked me about Claymore. No, Ashara is not inspired by Claymore, infact, although I really enjoyed it, I didn't even know of the manga/anime before. Having grown up in a martial arts dedicated family(no really) I can tell you that even a long wooden staff can give you a serious workout if you try and use it in combat. sure it doesn't weight much, but you have to accelerate it, and slam it against more or less squishy surfaces.
