Well it would work like a messaging app if there was only small messages to deal with, but there's a lot more to sync in Joplin :) A lot has been done in the past few years to make sync faster though, and I hope to make more improvements over time.

My biggest pain-point is note syncing speed between devices. I would really like it to be instant, like messaging apps like telegram do. But I guess this issue highlights how often and much I use Joplin, and how awesome it is for it to still be my top choice as a "2nd brain" software. Thank you for continuing to work on this amazing tool! <3

Hovering over the desktop app's format options in rich text editor should show the shortcut to trigger it; that way, I learn immediately a good shorthand for something that I would otherwise have to switch to my mouse to do. For example, if I hover over italics, it says "CTRL+I"; if I hover over inline code, it says... whatever that shortcut is! You can probably see that that is borne out of a personal laziness to figure out what that specific shortcut is! 😅😆

Features I'd like to see in core (existing plugins are buggy/broken): 1) forward an email in (with attachments) and convert to a note, and 2) OCR for images and pdfs so their content can be searchable. Also, I really miss the ability to sort search results by note name, date!

Daniel Vreeman

Not sure how feasible this is but I would love an ability to have shared notes with other users. Maybe one user can have Joplin could and the other could not and still view a note?

V

Thanks Laurent, I have tried that, but it's not very elegant when your notebook has 5000 notes :) A native solution would still be great.

This recently released plugin might help! https://discourse.joplinapp.org/t/note-list-preview-plugin/34719/1

Joplin is great. I use it every day. I would be very happy if i could share pdf of my notes in android app.

Pierre

and a more complex dreamy wish: using AI to highlight relevant notes to the note I'm writing in the moment, as in Michael Deans „Margin Muse“ here https://www.michaeldean.site/p/logloglog-4 (I haven't played around with Jarvis yet, maybe there are some parts of it already in there)

Ricarda Kiel

One probably very simple thing: the option for an always visible word/character count in some part of the note (up in the right hand corner with the date for example) would be extremely helpful to me

Ricarda Kiel

A lot of my notes are images. I would really love thumbnails in the notes list.

There are limits to what we can do with generic (non-specialised) sync targets such as WebDAV or Dropbox. Joplin Server (and Cloud) on the other recently got optimised, which should make syncing much faster when setting up a new device. More info here: https://joplinapp.org/news/20231223-faster-sync

WYSIWYG on mobile app would be a huge benefit :-)

Reading a lot of these comments, holy scope creep batman. I use joplin as my note system on every device, I sync via Webdav on Android and syncthing everywhere else. Noticed keeping a specific note up, like a recipe on my phone that I to keep referencing, doesn't work anymore. Switch apps and Joplin is back to home. Im on a pixel 2 though which is super out dated so probably my fault.

Rhys Rhaven

I would be very happy if I could use the Android app to search in the text of a note without having to switch to edit mode.

A while ago, the idea of Joplin as a static site generator was implemented then unimplemented. You'd publish a page and all pages linked from that page would be published too. This was a great idea, and I was told it would return once the bugs were ironed out. I'd really like to see that return. Great news about the OCR by the way. :)

For UI cleanliness, on windows I would love the ability to hide the editor bar (with bold button etc), hide all editor layout toggles, switch the file etc menu to a hamburger, and remove the horizontal separator lines from the note list. I would also love better image embedding across editors, so you can always see and scale the image. That’s it!

1. Syncing a large number of E2EE encrypted notes to a new phone takes days with even the most powerful cell phones. 2. Embedded video’s from YouTube etc. 3. Download Embedded videos from YouTube/Vimeo/etc. using ‘youtube-dl’.

There's no religion or obsession over the Markdown editor. We support and stay as close as possible the standard simply because it's a more durable format than a custom version of it. We don't want to become Emacs org-mode with a millions different features, so much that the only org-mode editor out there is Emacs. Instead we try to stick to the standard so that the notes remain editable and viewable in any third-party editors. For something more advanced, there are indeed plugins and the rich text editor. Perhaps give a try to the Rich Markdown plugin? For many users that work well, but I can understand it's not for everybody.

I appreciated improvements to the editor and UI improvements. I am really hoping that 2024 will bring some UX improvements like the much-requested ability to pin selected notes to the top of their notebook.

Scott Mortimer

I dunno if it's possible due to the database setup, but I'd like to see an option to make the notes list pull from all nested notebooks. Given folders `A > B > C`, clicking A would show notes in all three and B would show B and C. Like when doing a search there'd need to be something in the UI telling you which specific folder the current note is in. This can be accomplished currently with heavy tagging, but it's a bit clunky and awkward.

@chairmanbrando

I feel like circling back to the basics is warranted: Please make editing text better, and rise beyond legacy markdown limitations!! Example: Make text underlines and merged cells first class citizens, plus text colors. I love markdown for quick and clean notes, but its SOOO helpful to just color or underline a word now and then, especially when prepping something to print. Why make us go use a word processor for anything vaguely more ambitious than plaintext? I'm not asking for MS word bloat, but the "word processing feature creep dividing line" is slanted too far in the primitive direction atm. And plugins are too transient and wonky to rely on for getting such basic 1980's era capabilities as underlined text. Really. I dont get the stubborn religion of markdown purity and feature celibacy.

The WYSIWYG editor is my priority - there are a lot of bugs with it

(1) 2FA for self-hosting (2) “Long-Press to edit” (use case scenario: after searching for a keyword, Long-Press to edit, e.g. Password) Thank you

Glad the clipper generally works well for you! It's true there's no built-in way to submit a non working url at the moment, however feel free to post a comment on Patreon, Discord or the forum about it and I'll add it to the backlog. I'm generally keen to get the clipper working with as many web pages as possible

Laurent Cozic and Joplin Contributors

Thanks for the feedback! Stylus support is indeed great and we want to bring the feature to desktop too. As for OCR, good news, it's already done! There's one remaining bug that prevents me from releasing the feature but that should be fixed within the next few days

Laurent Cozic and Joplin Contributors

For me, the basic thing is the webclipper. I use it several times a day whenever I find something interesting. I save everything interesting, because sometimes things disappear irreversibly from the internet. Occasionally I come across a page that webclipper can't handle. I would like to be able to send the URL in question directly from webclipper to the Joplin developer so that he can take a look at it and possibly modify webclipper to handle it.

Miroslav Hlavička

stylus support for Androids was my game changer. #1 reason for leaving other note taking options and coming to Joplin fulltime. Next year would love to see OCR for the handwritten notes and other attached documents and search going thru those documents.
