What should we assign Ctrl+P to?
Added 2023-04-18 18:06:49 +0000 UTCCtrl+P in Joplin is currently assigned to the command Palette (also known as GotoAnything), and we're considering using that shortcut for Printing instead, as is more common. What should we do??

As coder, the mirror of VS Code bindings would be my preference. I guess setting these should be at install / upgrade time prompt.

2023-04-19 22:16:56 +0000 UTCI tried to print from joplin and vaguely recall having had troubles / bugs. Was in the early days, so think I ended copying text out to another app. But, I would print if it was good. certain kinds of text proofing are very effective if marking up paper with a red pen. If you just noodle text endlessly in digital form you never establish benchmarks and milestones, paper is like a versikn state, and PDFs are more teoublesome and slow to comment on. Paper is iltra portable. Sorry for killing trees but we buy recycled paper because paper is a renewable and very good technology for its designed purpose. So back to the point: don't be goody with ctrl p. I never need a command pallette whatever that is. I do need printing from time to time.. I edit, write and proof text.

2023-04-19 06:04:24 +0000 UTCI voted for ctrl-p for printing but In my opinion the go-to-anything feature should be merged into de search feature. I discovered this feature by asking a question on the Joplin forum.

2023-04-19 05:35:17 +0000 UTCI mostly agree with you but I have one use for printing in Joplin. I store recipes in Joplin and print them because reading recipes from devices when cooking is a pain. If I could make the recipe full screen and the screen not lock or blank I would stop printing... Not really fussed though as long as the option to print is available then the short cut is not that important to me.

2023-04-19 00:04:04 +0000 UTCI mostly agree, but I keep hitting CTRL+P to print, because it's used in most other programs I use. Maybe make it a customizable option?

2023-04-18 23:48:55 +0000 UTCPlease don't change established habits. There are some things you just don't touch. CTRL+C, CTRL+V, CTRL+X, CTRL+F, CTRL+P, CTRL+Z, CTRL+A etc. If you are bringing new features into the program, give them new keyboard shortcuts. Maybe YOU don't print right now, but for example I print daily (some to paper, some to PDF, but daily). And it's extremely stupid when a million programs have CTRL+P for Print and then Joplin comes along and it's the only one that has it completely different. Please respect the standards, don't change the established stuff. The maximum possible concession is editable keyboard shortcuts, so users can set them up as they wish. But by default, the 30+ year old classics should be there.

2023-04-18 21:18:37 +0000 UTCWhile I haven’t used the palette much, I don’t think I have ever directly printed from Joplin before. As a note taking app, I think the palette is a better choice, especially since it is similar to VS Code’s functionality. If there’s a lot of contention, perhaps consider making it swappable or assignable.

2023-04-18 21:06:34 +0000 UTCI didn't know about the palette tool before this. I've also never printed from Joplin (though occasionally use export to PDF). After trying the pallet I find it very useful and I would have liked to learn about it sooner!

2023-04-18 20:00:28 +0000 UTCI didn't even know the palette existed and I don't think I'll ever use it On the other hand I never print anything

2023-04-18 19:27:42 +0000 UTCOn a Windows installation it looks like an extra search function which works very well. How do we access that on Android and iOS?

2023-04-18 19:07:55 +0000 UTCCmd-P and Cmd-Shift-P currently mimic VS Code's go-to and command palettes respectively, and I like it that way. I think it's perfectly fine not to have Cmd-P do printing in apps that aren't really meant for it. 🤷♀️

2023-04-18 19:06:04 +0000 UTCHonestly I also didn't know about it. Maybe I should go to my PC and give the Palette a try.

2023-04-18 18:23:45 +0000 UTCSame here. I sort of feel that Ctrl+P for printing is obsolete, because printing to paper is obsolete and will be less and less common. But maybe some users use this for printing to PDF for instance

2023-04-18 18:23:38 +0000 UTCYes there will always be an option to change it in any case. But we want to decide what to do for the default shortcut

2023-04-18 18:21:41 +0000 UTCWe should probably promote it more. I almost only use this to navigate in Joplin!

2023-04-18 18:21:06 +0000 UTCoh i guess i could do Ctrl+P to find out lol. OMG this feature is amazing. why did i not know about it before?

2023-04-18 18:14:41 +0000 UTCCtrl+Shift+P would mirror vscode

2023-04-18 18:14:25 +0000 UTCMaybe it would be an option to let the user change the function of Ctrl+P in the settings?

2023-04-18 18:11:13 +0000 UTCMy personal (biased) viewpoint: Anytime I have pressed Ctrl+P and a print dialog comes up, it's not what I intended. I do not believe I have ever used a shortcut to access a print dialog.

2023-04-18 18:09:09 +0000 UTCI have never printed from Joplin, and possibly never will (I print very very little)
