Moving House (again)

We moved to Kodiak, Alaska in May 2024 to save on living expenses so that I could afford to retire from DAGames and work on music and NSFW content full-time. Unfortunately, things have not being going well for us here at all.

The house was in far worse condition than we expected. We knew that there were some leaks and water damage, and we thought our landlord could use our rent to fix those issues. However, it turns out that it wasn't just a simple leak. The room that was meant to be my work space for animation is completely uninhabitable. There's a gaping hole in the ceiling and an entire third of the floor is constantly soaked from the black moldy water that constantly drips through. The room next to it (which was supposed to be an extension of our space) has an even larger hole. The wood is visibly rotten and the floor shifts under our feet each time we walk over to empty the buckets of black water outside.

We've had no choice but to cram ourselves into a small room in another part of the house. There is barely enough space for my computer in here and no space at all to unpack our boxes. I was willing to accept these conditions at first - if it meant that I could afford to work on Patreon content full-time. However, that changed a few months ago when intense rain caused additional damage to the house and black water started leaking even into the small room where I sleep and work. As I write this, I am staring at black water leaking from the walls, from power outlets, and from a hole that opened up above the bed just two weeks ago.

Black water has also started leaking in the kitchen, splashing mold and tar onto our dishes. We temporarily solved this by purchasing large plastic tubs to collect water above the sink, as well as switching to disposable plates and bowls, but this is unsustainable. More leaks are already starting to appear in places we cannot deal with - and the people we've called to look at fixing the roof say that it can't be done without tearing down the walls.

Even though we're still in debt from our last move, we have no choice but to move again. Luckily, I have a friend in New Zealand with room at their place. He's a fellow NSFW content creator that I've worked with several times. He goes by N0N0 (also known as HelloHA) and he's the one that'll be helping me with the Shortstack Phalia model, and eventually he'll be the one to help me port ScragBoy's Phalia model to VRChat. The rent he's offering is even cheaper than our current place in Alaska, so we've decided to go ahead with it.

We'll be moving at the end of March. I'll be quite busy dealing with the move until then, as well as wrapping up the last 10% remaining on the DAGames project. I was able to take some time this week to make a few Phalia renders that I hope you'll like. These were originally intended for Valentines Day, but literally two days prior we had to evacuate the room to deal with the new hole that had just opened up in the ceiling. That's just how things have been lately. These renders will be going up in another post a few hours from now.

All the previous things I've mentioned such as art, animations, emotes, shirts, sketches, lore, etc. will be in progress again once this all blows over. I never wanted things to take this long but I also never expected things to get this bad. Thanks for sticking with me throughout all of this.

I hope you get everything sorted soon, sorry to read about the problems with your new house. Wishing you all the best

Cataclyzmika

Hope the NZ pizza dosn`t get you ;)

I've never personally had a bad experience working with DAGames. They've treated me very well over the years. I do want to move on, but that's mostly just so I can peruse my own ideas and projects, not due to any issues I've faced within the team itself.

Sending thoughts and prayers, also fantastic you're going to be able to detach yourself from DAGames and move onto brighter horizons. I've heard DAGames horror stories from people who worked with him (Not gonna mention anyone by name)

Cammy

So sorry to hear that, I can't imagine how stressful it is to have your home in a state like that. Hope everything works out well for you in NZ!

PocketSpud

Sorry that was your experience here in Alaska. I hope things get better for you in New Zealand.

kingspades

Wow, that sounds awful. I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I hope the new place back in NZ works out much better.

Robot Overlord

I hope so! It'll be nice to be back in my home country.

We were in talks with the owner for well over a year prior to the move. He had sent us pictures and videos of the rooms way in advance and the damage did not seem nearly as bad back then. He was also on a waiting list to receive free weatherization for the house at some point so it was possible the roof would be fixed before we arrived. We'd still need to replace the floors and repaint the walls, but we were told that we could design the space ourselves and choose what kind of flooring and color we wanted. The weatherization didn't happen, though. Even now he's still on the waiting list and has received no ETA. We became worried a few months out from the move, but figured that even without the free weatherization, the issues would still be fixable within a few months. When we saw the extent of the damage upon arrival, we adjusted our timeline on fixing things to a little over a year, which would have been fine if not ideal. The most recent damage (the stuff affecting the kitchen and our current room) only occurred as the result of a storm that happened a few months ago - and it was only about one week ago that we finally heard back from contractors who informed us that the roof can't be fixed without tearing down the walls. These are the real dealbreakers, which happened only after we arrived :/

Damn sounds like a nightmare, hopefully NZ works out!

Rex

Good luck man. Nobody deserves that crap.

Carl Webster

Yikes. I'll be praying for you, and you have my support. Wow, the house you're in sounds like an utter nightmare.

SuperBro.BrawlerKart

Wow, you’re moving to New Zealand that’s a big jump and hope everything’s gonna be all right for you and your partner

shotty_

Man, that's terrible. :( I'm glad you're gonna be somewhere cheaper, but my God... 🫂

Richard Rightmire

You moved into a house without looking at it first 🤨
