Kate & Allie Meet a Lesbian Couple

“Landlady” (October 15, 1984)

Right at the top of its second season, Kate & Allie did the thing so many sitcoms do and put out an episode that explicitly says, “No, these characters aren’t gay.” In this case, CBS had allegedly worried that viewers might suspect Susan St. James and Jane Curtain’s characters are anything other than platonic friends. On hand to discuss the show’s lesbian underpinnings is Leah Kopperman, the queer woman of our dreams and the winner of an exhaustive nationwide search for the guest who can offer context for this 80s TV favorite.

This episode’s outro track is “I Can’t Love (Female Version)” by Charley, which is not on any of the streaming services so why don’t you listen to it on Youtube?

I assume YouTube or Dailymotion, but also am not 100 percent sure because it was a long time ago

Where did you find this episode for viewing (also the Murphy Brown you covered)?

Best. Random. Compliment. Ever. Thank you for that! Johnson is actually my married name. I suffered with a ridiculous last name for most of my life, so, when I had the chance, I changed it immediately

I don't know, I'm kind of on Kate and Allie's side at the end of this one. Like yeah it's a stupid sitcom scenario that'd never happen, queer people don't have the power to determine straight relationships. But landlords, who own entire buildings, definitionally have more privilege than their tenants, who can only afford to rent. And that kind of money definitely gives you the ability to make life miserable for other people.

I've apparently been conflating "Kate & Allie" with "Cagney & Lacey" for my entire life. That laugh track really threw me for a loop.
