Cybill Befriends the Gay Waiter

“Three Women and a Dummy” (May 13, 1996)

Alongside Murphy Brown, Designing Women and The Nanny, Cybill was one of CBS’s female-forward heavy-hitters in the 1990s. It didn’t last as long as the other three — and yes, there’s quite the story there — but in its four seasons it did manage to give us the Waiter. Played by Tim Maculan, he’s one of the more important queer characters to recurr on a popular sitcom in the decade. We discuss this, plus Alan Ball’s involvement, the whole Cybill vs. Baranski controversy and whether this show was a remake of Absolutely Fabulous or not.

When you started answering my question at the end of this episode (I listen on the main feed because I am lazy), I squealed with joy. And then I was positively tickled as you both explained, in interestingly chosen detail, from where you both come. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer but mostly for being so (continually) open and honest. I have a similar background, at least when it comes to being fascinated with pop culture and having very little avenue to discuss said interests. Friends these days get flooded with pop theory and I'm always pleasantly surprised when people want to continue engaging. TEAM GLEN! And not because he's the seemingly more tragic one, as Glen suggested. There's a hesitation that I hear in a lot of Glen's lines, almost as if he's always holding back just a bit. How could somebody not want to know more?! Also, his nerdy interests more closely align with mine -- read more comics everybody!

This is not. abad idea. However, most of my outro tracks have already appeared on Deep Cuts.

You should have pushed the playlist request to Deep Cuts & Superficial Wounds!

Great episode! Thanks for sharing some of your own stories at the end. I feel like I spend a lot of time with you in my ears and knowing a little more about you makes it more clear why I love your work so much.
