Roseanne’s Friend Is a Lesbian (But Is Later Bi)

“Ladies’ Choice” (November 10, 1992)

Ninety episodes later, we dared to venture back to Roseanne. How does its legacy of LGBT advocacy hold up all these years later — and in light of the show’s namesake’s hard right turn into all manner of Trumpy badness? Glen and Drew have their takes, but that ultimate decision is up to you. However, this episode represents a milestone in representation as it makes Sandra Bernhard’s Nancy a queer part of the show for seasons to come.

Listen to Roseanne writer Stan Zimmerman share his stories about Sandra Bernhard in our interview with him.

Listen to episodes of Katherine’s podcast, Smart Mouth, including being vegan in Iceland and the history of department store lunch counters.

This episode’s outro track is “Pistol in My Pocket” by Lana Pillay, which despite being a total banger doesn’t seem to be streaming anywhere, so I guess just listen to it on YouTube?

I would love a That Girl episode!

I should go back and describe her as racist as well, but I do feel it’s a combination of both factors: having racist views and also having some sort of predisposition that especially the last ten years seems to speak against her own interest. I do think it’s more than “being bad at PR,” but also I’m not a psychiatrist and am unsure what sort of mania I can ascribe that behavior to.

I don't think "unstable" is the word you want in that intro. Bigotry is not a mental illness and neither is being bad at PR.

I'm tickled that someone else even remembers that SNL "Good Times" sketch. "Is this a bad time to mention that I've got sickle cell?" is one of those minor jokes that still makes me laugh whenever I think of it.

Erin Hardy

I know that the people were mad about it were probably mostly die hard fans but still

I got Hudson Hawk recently as a gift and after watching all of moonlighting I realize that all the hate that movie got was hella dumb because it was pretty much an episode of moonlighting with the added bonus of Bernhardt and Richard E. Grant.

Lobo

I guess my brain blocked that out. Continued bad behavior notwithstanding, she could have just refused to relinquish her rights to the characters. She didn’t. And that does show a small amount of grace, all performance to the contrary.

Drew Mackie

Great episode! Minor point on the end, I don’t think Roseanne went quietly so much as she just became ignored. If I remember correctly, she did agree to let the show continue but almost instantly expressed regret and hostility toward the cast. She then made a string of really unhinged YouTube videos, appeared on Fox News a couple of times, and then went on a MAGA-heavy grievance comedy tour with Andrew Dice Clay before COVID times.
