Patty Bouvier Has a Girlfriend + Every LGBT Joke on The Simpsons Ever

“Livin’ la Pura Vida” (November 17, 2019)

The Simpsons are going to Costa Rica! Gayest Episode Ever returns for its fourth season with an installment of The Simpsons that demonstrates how much the show has evolved in 31 seasons. But that’s not all! In addition to discussing Patty’s first functional relationship, we’re also introducing a new side project: “Smithers & Beyond: Every LGBT Joke on The Simpsons Ever.” Assembled over the course of the last year by Drew, it shows not just every “Smithers is gay” joke but how the shows approach to LGBT topics reflects the changing American conversation about queer people and queer issues.

We discuss the “Smithers & Beyond” at the top of the episode, but you can watch the video here.

Heads-up to Patreon people: You’re getting this episode the same day as everyone on the main feed, just because it didn’t make sense to let the video go live to the public without the accompanying podcast episode going live, for everyone, at the same time. You’ll be getting the next GEE next week, while the public feed will be dark.

Yeah... He was young enough to not realize how that humor comes across. I wonder if he still does anything close to it on his current talk show.

yes please!

Your summary of the Simpsons approach to “gay jokes” in the early seasons reminded me of how similarly homophobic Simpsons writer-turned-talk show host Conan O’Brien’s show was in its first couple of decades. So many punchlines revolving around insinuating that Conan, Andy, a band member or somebody in the audience might be gay. A few years ago Conan made the podcast rounds announcing he’d cut a deal with NBC to put the complete and unedited archives of his Late Nite show on the web. It missed the deadline and only select clips ended up being posted, and I have to imagine somebody realized a lot of this stuff wasn’t going to play anymore.

👋 hello! my lovely husband just got me some old moonlighting DVD’s would you like me to keep an eye out for an episode for you guys?

Hey, I'm listening and I'm not hearing it. Is it throughout the whole episode after the 5-minute mark?

Drew Mackie

Something's up with the audio about five minutes in. There's a weird, muffled, echo of everything Drew says, like the audio track is playing over itself.
