After the events of Soul Society, Matsumoto was bored with her routine as a lieutenant in the 10th division. So she decided to use her Gigai (an artificial body that allows Shinigami to remain in the Human World and interact with humans) to get a new job: being a police officer. she quickly caught the attention of everyone around her. However, when she accepted a job as a policewoman, she realized that she was completely out of her comfort zone. Rangiku had no idea how to be an effective policewoman, and at the police station she was completely useless. The chief of police (an old, balding man known for being corrupt) began offering her special after-hours “training” in his office.

Rangiku, with her seductive nature, didn't mind changing out of her police uniform and into more revealing clothes, becoming a constant presence in the chief's office. However, some policemen decided to investigate and spied on them for a few days. They eventually discovered that the "training" actually consisted of her having "fun" with him every day. In the end, Rangiku became a controversial figure in the police station, desired by some, hated by others. In Soul society, she's an important lieutenant, while on earth, she became the police chief's cum dump... something she very much enjoys being.
