my take on meshuggah : I'm still a fan, but I don't listen to them as much as I did before, because I think they've dropped off in quality over their last 2-3 albums, but at their best, they purify metal into its absolute essentials : groove, aggression, intensity, with no extra fat or trimmings (like the blues influence that classic metal had/has), and you think, why can't all metal sound this way? it's very pristine. I dont't think people gravitate to meshuggah because they're burned out on metal, but because they represent the purity of the genre ; the guitarist said in an interview that most fans of his band don't listen to other metal .. also, you hit the nail on the head with that analysis of the last, breakdown section, that is pretty much meshuggah's entire modus operandi - when you catch that regular cymbal-work (which is marking the groove, which all the craziness around is basically circling around, and will eventually return to), then it becomes the grooviest music in the world, just my 2 cents

yeah.. I get u. Meshuggah, for me, is a band to appreciate , but not for diggin it. I love myself all kinds of jazzy, prog, complex metal.. but, but I need more than what Meshuggah offers.
