Fwiw, a huge influence on the Pumpkins and that huge layered guitar sound is shoegaze music like The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. Combine MBV, Sonic Youth (as @ralch mentioned above), and Black Sabbath, you should have something pretty Pumpkinsesque.

For a long time I just thought I was into the music back then because I was entering my teen years, but here are a few of the bands who took off between 1990 and 1995: Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Sound Garden, Nirvana, Candle box, Temple of the Dog, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Live, Smashing Pumpkins, Matchbox 20, and the list goes on and on. There was a lot of good stuff in the 70s and 80s, and there was good music in the late 90s and even the early 2000s, but if there was one magic 5 year period that gave birth to the most icons it was probably that 5 year period. 2004 - 2024: Coheed and Cambria, Fair to Midland (which only about 15 people know about, but are amazing) and.....well, I guess just those two.
