Nigel Pulsford and Gavin started having songwriting issues on "Golden State" because Gavin was at the height of his ego. He told Nigel "I'm the song writer in this band. If you don't like it you can leave." Nigel left the band after finishing that album and it's one of the clearest examples of why Gavin is not so great on his own. Nigel brought the edge and the grit and that's why they were so successful.
