This has hundreds of comments so I'm sure many people have explained it by now. BUT JUST IN CASE. This song was written from the point of view of working-class people breaking their backs while "installing microwave ovens and delivering color TVs" complaining to each other about MTV rock stars who are millionaires with private jets and are also getting more p***y than they know what to do with just for being famous and rich. As for the homophobic slurs, Knopfler was called out for this at the time, when open homophobia was just the status quo. Knopfler's defense for this was that this is how working-class people viewed a lot of rock stars at the time. And since he was himself a rock star, he was essentially calling himself a f****t in the lyrics.
