One such band to influence grunge--though they are not grunge--was Sonic Youth. They played with noise, distortion, and unpolished vocals, but they managed to create some pretty haunting compositions through their craft. And they could come up with straight-up rock and roll when they wanted to. My suggestion: "Disappearer" (1990) From their 80s output: "Teen Age Riot" (1988) Also, Dinosaur Jr. was a very influential band. My choice from them: "Freak Scene".
