Grateful Dead - Touch Of Grey (REACTION!! PT. 1!)

Comments

Love the Dead…such a great concert which I saw before Jerry passed. I was 14 and still shroomin out. So good and this I saw on MTV as a child, and when the skeletons came in, it freaked me out. As I grew up, I appreciated it and everything they did. Phish tried and failed miserably, but give ‘em credit for trying. No bashing anyone who goes out there and gives it a shot. Good song, but Friend Of The Devil is such a better song. Wish it would’ve won. This didn’t go to Dropbox but it’s on YouTube which I’m curious about. Why have Patreon when it’s all on YouTube? I don’t get it. That’s just me. Free thinker.

Exactly. 12 killer fucking songs. But made theirs shit in interminable hours worth of guitar noodling.

Black Sabbath and Grateful Dead are my 2 favorite bands. The Dead definitely grew on me big time, it wasn't immediate

SpiralArchitect

Probably the best song by a band I don't like. But it's a good track. The Dead were always too jam-band / noodley note for me.

The only song I like from a band that I have little interest in hearing. Nice reaction and enjoying the new format.

J B

My favorite Grateful Dead song. The meaning is pretty simple. This song is about getting older and basically just having to deal with it. The music video to this song is cool as hell.

Shawn Dixon

Cool ass story

Skilgannon the Damned

Usually don't tell this story...BUT,I went to see David Lee Roth in concert...when we left we couldn't get my truck out of the field because it was surrounded by TENTS. We walked out to the street and saw no less than 5 police cars just on that side of the field (later learning that they say there keeping the "Dead Heads" in the field 😂😂 )..we walked around and it wasn't 30 minutes my buddy followed the smell of hash to a tent with 2 guys/4 girls and he scored some hash...as we were leaving people ran by us telling "the musicians, the musician s"...we followed them to a drum circle of 2/3 acoustic guitars,a jug,a washboard.....we sat there listened for awhile, told some random guy we'd never seen the grateful dead before, all of a sudden we were escorted to this massive tent..I mean this thing was tricked out, hard to explain but it was like sultan shit, like he was there for days (which make sense, cuz I think they were playing 3/4 shows) but to end the story we ended up with tickets, drink acid everything the stereotype dead concert would need....BUT....it changed our lives !!!! We tripped with a field of people, when the sun came up we looked thru kaleidoscopes...the guy with them called me a big glob of fun.....we went to the show...that was crazy...when the band stopped playing....everyone sat down....on the floor !?!?!?! When they started playing it looked like one of those old electric football games...it looked like the floor was electrified, everyone dancing(and typical hippie dance, alot of arm movement....anyway...we left....experienced the field again (oh and to be clear,we were playing for the acid, but we didn't pay for anything else....the other drugs, they were cooking food, etc) .....The morning we left...I was noticing flowers on the side of the road...the fact that the trees were blooming..everything was fucking beautiful !!!!!! And I loved everyone,my fellow man was needed not just in this with me... it was wonderful....unexplainable,but that time in the field after a David Lee Roth concert really did CHANGE MY LIFE !!

If there was one song to not get a good representation of the Dead, it’s this one. I really like the song, but #2 is closer to the sound most think of when you mention them. Worthy of a second look.

Aredoubleyou

wake me up when it's over.

Jay Ray

From seeing quite a few of these polls so far, my opinion is that whichever song comes in SECOND should be the reaction video. #1 is ALWAYS the one with the most commercial appeal, and almost never a good, accurate representation of the band...any of the bands.

David Bissaillon

again I love the vegas backdrop

shawn wayne sikes

Please check out Tedeschi Trucks Band - midnight in Harlem

Eric Holladay

So disappointed in this vote. Probably the worst representation of what the Dead were.

Eric Holladay

I was hoping this one wouldn’t win. Hate this song but will give it a listen to hear your thoughts. But I’m not happy you’re making me listen to this again! Lol.

I know this is a radio song, but it’s such a masterful pop song. I love it, thanks for reacting! Now, if only Queen could get on here...

here's the reason why Touch of Grey was so controversial in the comments. if you were looking for any of the genuis of the Dead's gumbo, this wasn't it. this was their "pop" single that got radio rotation and even an Mtv video! LOL it is a happy song, and i love Ryan was head bopping along. But please do a re-visit. Even "Truckin" and "Casey Jones" are a little too mainstream to really "get" the Dead, but they're closer. no one song will really give you the gumbo mix -- it's their vast catalog that gives you the blues, blue-grass, rock, gospel, psychedelic rock. So please do a runner up and then maybe even a deeper cut. We Dead Heads can help you out on it. :)

Joanna Corwin

Sorry guys I'm a minute into the song and I'm going straight to part 2. Just could never get into the Greatful Dead.

Dave P

This would not have been my first pick. Never really cared for this song. It's a bit too twangy for me and I don't really care much for the melody or instrumentation. Great video guys. I'm looking forward to part 2!

Renee King

Greatful Dead never really appealed to me other than this song. Ironic to me that George gave a shout out to subs in Brazil, Português language. give that language a try next time lol - I’m headed to Brazil on a business trip very soon.

Todd Jackson

"The lyrics are cryptic." Not when you get over 40.

Eric Wincentsen

I was raised on rock from everything from Chuck Berry to Slayer, but Greatful Dead never really appealed to me. I was always bored when listening to their music. I know you like southern rock so I recommend Black Oak Arkansas - "When the Electricy Came to Arkansas".

Rheannon Graves

This was their last really big hit. Wish y'all had done Truckin, or Casey Jones instead. Y'all need to revisit these guys and do Truckin.

John Gandy

Looking forward to this. tried The Dead a couple of times, but haven't resonated with me. But, glad to try again with you guys. Although...... This Norwegian is praying for a reaction to North Mississippi Allstars - Long Haired Doney

Stefan Lien

As a self-proclaimed metal elitist and unapologetic deathcrusher, I have to confess a soft spot for the Grateful Dead - it's hard not to listen to their songs without a big smile on my face, and it's all so weirdly mellow compared to what I would normally listen to. Great song, and a great choice of bands!

Pietyr Ayday

"Ball and Chain" by Social Distortion, please.

Dead Mail Tales

I'm loving that you guys are posting on my schedule! It allows me to click on your video as soon as I get the notification and post super early -- because I am getting the word out on Epica!!! I also want to continue with my recommendation on how to handle the poll contests. Please give me a like if you agree with this: If a band has one or two big radio hits, then a poll of ten songs is not only kinda pointless, but actually detrimental to your audience. The radio hits are going to be voted on by a bunch of casual listeners of the band who probably don't really care if their vote wins or not, and all the hardcore fans are going to be disappointed because they are all goin to be sick of "that damn song" that "doesn't represent the band at all" and "was their sellout moment!!!" So. I think Lost in Vegas should choose to do poll contests for: a) bands that have a bunch of big hits, and b) bands with a hardcore fanbase but no mainstream recognition whatsoever. Examples: a) Led Zepplin. What song would win? Stairway to Heaven? Are you sure? Why not Whole Lotta Love, or Kashmir? Or the dark horse favorite, Black Dog? b) Epica. Never been on the radio, has a small but devoted fanbase (of probably only one person on this Patreon, it's true) who will all be happy that any song got selected for a reaction, and if people who have never listened to the band votes anyway, their choice will essentially be random and not impact the outcome in any meaningful way. Just a suggestion, guys, Looking forward to the podcast! P.S. I'll post my comments on the video once I watch it, just trying to jump on the good timing. Also, since I know it isn’t actually worth doing a poll for Epica… The Cosmic Algorithm, please!

Justin Vaughan

Woo Hoo!! Love it! Thank you so much for this reaction. Hope to see more Dead reactions in the future!
