Love the mystery reaction, and love what it was! "The Real Thing" was something of a landmark album at the time. We were seeing a lot of crossover bands emerge who didn't want to be pigeon-holed into a single niche or genre. Metal was growing up and branching out in every direction. What I love about this particular album at the time was how every song seemed to be it's own thing. Each track offered something different, but somehow managed to keep a cohesive sound throughout.
Some of the other albums/groups around this time that I think stood out in a similar way include Wrathchild America ("3D"), Mordred ("In This Life"), and Suicidal Tendencies ("Lights, Camera, Revolution").
