Cat Breed Guide: Cymric!

Gooood Monday, my Garfields! Thank you for joining another month here on my patreon. I'm so happy you're here! <3 After this, I'm gonna go to Ikea with my swan mom, so I'm pretty excited. I sleep with my Blåhaj every night and it's become so distorted over time, I'm a little scared to see what the healthy ones look like. But I could never replace mine after all our nights together where they helplessly watched me act out dreams where I'm a go-kart trying to buck wild children off of me at the Missouri state fair.

Anyways! This week's breed was suggested by Kaori, knower of cats!! Thanks so much!! Lil bunny cats are just too cute... I usually try to keep these funny and upbeat, but sometimes I wonder what I should write when breeding for certain traits can cause big health issues. Do you guys think those topics should be included?

Some cat breeds really shouldn't be bred further, and some should only be bred through certain careful practices. Like Sphynx cats, initially they were outcrossed to breeds like Devon Rexes to widen the gene pool but this introduced certain health problems, and it was later found through genetic testing that American Shorthairs would be good to outcross to for widening the gene pool without introducing certain health problems. Anyways I think that's still correct, I haven't looked this up in a long time!

I think bringing up health issues is good, and you're good at keeping things light despite the subject matter.

Definitely good to bring up the health issues, it's important to remember. Plus, you keep the tone light so it isn't too upsetting to read. Also I just realised I have a cat breed to recommend if you don't have them included already! I had a Korat for most of my childhood, she was really sweet and cuddly but also meowed literally constantly lmao

I think it's good to include the health concerns! It's 100% okay to appreciate existing cats while acknowledging that maaaaybe we shouldn't be breeding more of them on purpose if it's going to set them up poorly. :(

Spadefish

It wouldn't be an honest account (insofar as these are honest accounts) of the breed without mentioning the health issues. Those details are important.

i think it’s good that you point the health stuff out. there’s always a sprinkle of dark humor in there too (haunting us for all of eternity) which is on brand? you do a great job of showing us these breeds

Ves

I always appreciate you talking about the health issues because people still dont seem to know about them?? I always bring up these things when talking about scottish folds and people are so shocked every time

Tanja

Thank you for including the health issues, So many of these special babies can have issues and no one seems to think about that.

I think your blend of cute and surreal visuals and unflinchingly realistic emotions is one of the things that makes your art so special. If there's hard truths to a topic, I can think of no better artist to cover it alongside adorable baby animals.

Charlie

That’s awful!! I always worry about Breakfast cause of how bad his back legs are. Luckily he’s a star student at using the box! People have said they wanted to get a cat just like him, and I get it, but his lineage must end with him.

I appreciate it! Working at a shelter, we sometimes got Manx cats that were incontinent. They are so very sweet, but I wish people would consider the ethics of animal breeding more.

I think including health issues is a good idea! Plenty of media covers the cute and light hearted only content when really the health issues should always be at least mentioned briefly so people understand what they're getting into medically with the breeds.
