Snail Diaries #155!!
Added 2022-02-18 23:06:45 +0000 UTC
I haven't really written any diary comics about my dog job (which is a shame tbh) since I started drawing these long after I quit but... For some reason, the mental image of my beautiful coworker in the fetal position tongue punching the air by a terrified dog shot back into my brain last night.
(and yeah it... kinda worked lol)
Is your ex coworker depicted as a crested gecko? π
Also, I hope you brought chapstick or balm that day, jeezus

I've done like really basic stuff with my cats (sitting for food and coming when i call) but they DO respond really well to the clicker. it's definitely makes training even the most difficult dogs seem like a piece of cake though π

Some of these helped me get the shed cats to trust me!! I didnβt try the licking thing tho since cats donβt do that. Cats are motivated by treats and Iβve heard they really respond to βclickerβ training with a clicker! Iβd search some YouTube videos about it. I just let my cats do whatever they want tho so I have no experience π

I think my kitten is bored and might like training. Would training work the same way as with dogs?
Diddle and Grace, did you ever try to train (your) cats?

Other dogs do these behaviors to show that they arenβt a threat and donβt want to fight. When working with dogs, you want them to trust you and not think youβre there to hurt them! It helpful with dogs that are very fearful, and sometimes dogs that are showing aggression due to fear. But if a dog is actually trying to bite you, I wouldnβt recommend doing this!

it's to make aggressive, anxious, or fearful dogs feel more comfortable around you! generally if they're showing these signs, they see you as a threat, so appearing submissive tells them "hey, I'm cool! I'm not going to hurt you!" (to varying success lol)

Wait so this is to appear submissive to the dog? Why would you want to do that? Please explain!

Right, I havenβt seen anyone else mention it, but dogs DO lick their lips to demonstrate submissiveness so I always tried it out afterwards to see if itβd help a dog feel less threatened by me. Justβ¦. Not when other people were around to watch ππ

I CANNOT stop laughing. I work at a doggy daycare so I can attest to the getting down low and facing your side to them. But I usually put out a hand while not looking at them, so they can check me out. But the tongue thing has me *dead*.
