I am curious about how Joss Whedon handled this. He mentioned in an interview that his intention was to kill Tara off way earlier in the season but he couldn't bring himself to do it. I wonder what the arc would have been for Willow had it happened earlier. Would her descent have been slower? I guess we will never know.

As an audience you can understand her initial revenge, even if you don't agree with it, but when she goes after Jonathan and Andrew it seems to be getting out of hand. Then when she zaps Anya you start thinking...oh shit.....then the truck....OH SHIT....but when she taunts and threatens Dawn it becomes OH FUCK, you realize that Dark Willow is fully in charge and is full of hurt and rage. As a storytelling tool, having Dark Willow is just SO MUCH FUN, especially for a show that's in its sixth season. I love the little bit of Willow that peeks thru when she's talking about how special Tara made her feel, I love the Buffy/Willow fight at the end, I love Dawn finally standing up and saying that's she's not some incompetent child and trying to be proactive to help her friend and I adore the Giles reveal at the end. The worst thing is that Tara had to die to get here.

2023-03-29 06:41:13 +0000 UTCI think it's so fun that you mentioned how you thought the trio would be the big bad of the season but then they just turn it around and it's actually Willow, cause one of the many things that makes this season my favorite is that if you watch it again you can actually see so many pointers and a lot of foreshadowing to Willow actually being the villain or big bad of the season and I think thats so cool! Thank you for such a great reaction! :)
