Hi everyone!
I'm currently half way through my project about Jonathan "Jack" Idema. His life story is bonkers and I think that this documentary will be a spiritual successor to my John McAfee series. At the beginning of the US war in Afghanistan, Jack, who was a 45 year civilian at the time, entered the country with the goal of rounding up terrorists and collecting the $25 million dollar reward for the capture of Osama bin Laden. In 2004, he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in Afghan prison for starting a private prison and torturing Afghans who he suspected to be terrorists. He was pardoned three years into his prison stay and traveled to Mexico where he died of AIDS.
I've been working closely with Jack's widow who I met in Connecticut to interview. She also gave me thousands of Jack's personal files, documents, and Betacam tapes (which I spent nearly a grand digitizing.) When she arrived to my Airbnb, she was followed by the Secret Service since she brought along Ronald Gene Barbour who was in prison with Jack during the 1990s for threating to assassinate Bill Clinton. Yeah, so the Secret Service just chilled in front of our Airbnb the whole time they were there. It was probably the strangest thing that's ever happened to me in my life!
Since then, I've made a lot of progress on the video, and have interviewed a lot of other people who knew Jack. The topic is really obscure so I'm glad that I was able to secure a large amount of exclusive material for it. It's the first time that I feel as though I'm making a "real" documentary, rather than something anyone can make with access to Google and by making phone calls.
It will probably take another month to finish, so please be patient! Everyone who is subbed to my Patreon will get early access to the full documentary. My plan is to post it in parts to Youtube to avoid demonitization which will surely happen if I post it there as a whole. People subbed here will get it all early and in full, while people watching on Youtube will have to wait a few days between each part.
Anyway, attached is a photo I took with Ronald Gene Barbour in front of my Airbnb.
