Jack Saint's Start O' The Month Round-Up [April 2019]
Added 2019-04-01 13:23:58 +0000 UTCHey folks!
So I've been horribly neglectful of my Patrons the last few months, not really offering much in the way of exclusive content as I'd have hoped to when I started accruing a larger backer-base ("backbase"? dunno). I'm going to remedy that going forward, starting with this new thing I plan to do at the start of every month called the SOTMRU (or Start O' The Month Round-Up) - essentially a Patron-exclusive monthly text post where I summarize what I'm up to and what kind of content can be expected this month. Without further ado!!!
The Dirt: Anatomy Of A Movie That Genuinely Hates Women
So kicking things off this month, I finally have a script I'm happy with for my first April video which will be covering the recently released Netflix Motley Crue biopic, The Dirt. What the film represents is an interesting case whereby, on a surface level, it is very obviously absurdly misogynistic - women are exclusively doting mothers, "huge bitches", or things to put dicks in - yet overlaid onto that are several 'justifications' for why it's fine that that's the case. "It's more authentic to a Motley Crue movie", "This is just what it was like back then", "It's a true story", etc. And I think there is a dynamic there that's interesting, how implicit justifications can be used to excuse very overtly regressive and bigoted content, so that'll be a shorter video just delving into that a bit. Expect it optimistically by the end of the week, more likely the start of next week.
It's Time To Talk About Toy Story
Coming off of my Talking Dog Movie video, I noticed certain "themes" present in the Toy Story 4 trailer that made me think a lot about the dynamics at play in that franchise that I think deserve closer examination. It's an odd situation where I think Toy Story has largely been excused from a lot of cultural conversations on the basis that it means so much to so many people, but I think this is one sacred cow worth digging into (yes I'm using that line in the video). I'm still doing some preliminary research so this'll be more like an end-of-the-month thing, but it will be a thing!
Both videos are going to be sponsored by Skillshare, who through their sponsorships are basically the reason I get to act like this is my full-time career for the next couple of months. Yay, Skillshare!
Twitch Streams
I've been having a lot of trouble holding an audience for the last month or so over on my Twitch channel, which may be a combination of my erratic schedule and possibly the games I choose to play. I definitely want to keep going with my XCOM2 Long War 2 playthrough, which has accrued a small but fairly dedicated audience, but I also want to expand - which is where you folks come in.
Alongside setting a more defined schedule for working through my XCOM2 playthrough - possibly a dedicated 4-hour slot twice a week, or some such - I'd also like to mix things up with some variety streams, playing more stuff that might be appealing to more people. My donation goals fund on the stream itself has a fun list of games to motivate people to chip in, I also own a few different games I own but haven't played (or haven't played in a while) which may interest viewers. Among those are Darksiders, Little Nightmares, The Movies, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Spore, Tales From The Borderlands, Dragon Age: Origins and System Shock 2. If any of those games (or more) pique your interest and you'd like to see me play, please let me know - I'm also up for suggestions what times of day would be best for anyone interested in the stream, so I can figure out what works best.
VidCon!
Hey! I might be going to VidCon? I kind of want to go to VidCon. It'd probably be my only big opportunity to meet fellow creators and hang out with fans of my work, but also it's a pretty huge expense and will chop a week off of my production schedule. If anyone has experience with the con and can recommend it one way or the other, or just wants to let me know if they're going so I can feel more confident people who know me would actually bet here, comment down below!
Other than that, you're all always free to get in touch via Twitter, and I'l catch up with you all soon! Love you all, and stay safe.
