As a diehard Friends fan, I could never quite work out why there was such an antipathy towards the show by so many. On a rewatch, I decided to do some reflection - and uncover the ways this show's peculiar brand of 'political correctness' actually did more to date the show than any amount of subversive edge ever would have.
With the recent fervor surrounding Friends' cancellation (and un-cancellation) from Netflix, I was inspired to check out the old show - and what I found was maybe a bit more discomforting than I'd expected. I hope both fans and non-fans alike can enjoy this episode, as I track how this cultural touchstone demonstrates the insidious nature of the true 'politically correct'.
Many apologies if you're a $5+ Patron who wasn't listed in the credits - we're gaining people so often now it's hard to keep up! Rest assured, even if you un-sub now, you'll still be listed next episode.
Much love to you all, and have a great Sunday.
