Across the crossroads, you may come upon a near-drowned youth, who begs you to look for a trace of his fiancée, Marie, who he lost while escaping. All you'll find is a ring, and a towering pigboss patroling the area, giving some clue to her fate, but nothing more.
However... Take the road less traveled, and you will come upon the girl herself, Marie, taken away to the Occult warcamp in Rivermont, thrown in with the rest of the prisoners and awaiting her fate, where she meets with none other than Claire's own mother...
But Marie's romance is not to be. Take the Hookton approach, and her fiancée can be rescued, but not her. Take the Rivermont approach in the Prologue, and you may be able to save her, but not the fiancée. Or leave both to wallow, for their destiny is to perish, and only through Claire's strenuous intervention will either one get a slim hope for survival. For this is a dark world, and sometimes, there are no truly happy endings.
