Upcoming Patreon Sales Tax

Hi everybody,

You may have heard this news already, especially if you support other creators, but I think it wise to make an announcement on my end too.

Okay, so next month, as of July 1st, Patreon is adding sales tax to all applicable pledges on Patreon.

This means that, in most situations, the amount you pay for your pledge will be increasing slightly. First and foremost, I want to be extremely clear and fair, and state that this is NOT Patreon's decision - this is a government-mandated change, specifically the government of parts of the USA and 17 other countries, and it is not something that Patreon is choosing to do willingly.

All of the sales tax goes immediately to certain participating governments, and Patreon has no choice in whether or not they implement it. People are often quick to jump on the hate bandwagon when Patreon makes changes like this, so I want to be as clear as possible that it's not their decision, and quitting Patreon/no longer supporting creators on here will not make Patreon reverse the changes, because this new sales tax is legally required and they have no say in the matter.

That being said, I completely understand if the increased charges mean any of you have to lower your pledge, or stop supporting us. Rest assured there are no hard feelings about it if you do need to do either of those things, especially in the current COVID climate. May I please remind everyone to ensure you prioritize having enough food and supplies over supporting us; we're offering free content via our public discord throughout this troubling period, so rest assured, you'll get to enjoy a lot of our content even if you can't afford to support right now!

Now, the reason for this announcement is because I want to make sure that everybody is informed about what's happening, and that there are no misunderstandings about why it's happening. If you have any questions, feel free to either ask me and I can try to explain to the best of my knowledge, or message Patreon support and they can give you more information!

Patreon themselves have been sending out messages about these in the past month, so look through your emails and you may find the information you need. For a list of countries affected by the new sales tax, see here:

Right now it's hard to tell how these taxes will affect your pledge, even with the chart. It's likely we won't see how it runs its course until the first time it's applied, but hopefully it won't damage us too much. Anyway, that's about it for the sales tax changes. Thank you for supporting everyone, whether you stay at your current pledge or not after these changes.

On a cheerier note, you can expect major updates for our game-related content this month, so please look forward to that!

That is one bizarre smattering of countries that joined this. Australia and New Zealand, sure, but virtually no one from Europe, no Britain, just 1 of 10 Canadian provinces. Meanwhile, just lovely countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Belarus are on board!

Norway being a bitch to me again. A increase of 25% though will not change a whole lot for me.

That's nothing new here... So nothing changes here for me...

Yo thank you so much for this thoughtful post about all of this!

I wish I could say that. That tax money used in the United States will just go to trampling on minority groups or be used to spread freedom (aka exploitative capitalism) to whatever random country we decide needs more democracy (aka is profitable for our companies to exploit).

Huh. Evidently the UK is clear of this tax increase. Not complaining, just find it kinda odd. I mean, pretty sure the south west over here had taxes on pasties a few years back. Nonetheless, thanks for the heads up, didnt know this was happening to begin with :)

Can confirm I've been paying +20% on Patreon for about 3-4 years now, at least Patreon are actually giving that money to the government's that are charging it This means patreons are giving to pay off government loans for schools, hospitals, internet, roads, care homes via their subscriptions Companies like Amazon charge sales taxes but don't give any of that money to governments. Meaning they abuse the roads, internet, and workers of nations but don't pay anything towards looking after those things

^ same, thanks! (Y) BTW, patreon has been charging sales tax in the EU for years now, so it's nothing new for european patreons
