Regarding what you said about female characters not having important roles in Indian cinema, I think the movies that you have mostly watched are regional movies. Regional movies have known to be cringe and regressive for the longest time. Bollywood movies are not like that and in todays day have equal opportunities and roles for males and females. You have watched Padmaavat, Andhadhun, Pathaan, Sardar Udham & Gangs of Wasseypur from Bollywood so far. Except for Sardar Udham which was a biography and Gangs which was a description of a regressive time and area, all the other 3 movies have had important female characters. Tabu in Andhadhun, and Deepika playing Padmaavati. Also fyi the 2 male leads in Padmaavat, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor are A- listers in Bollywood, but were still paid lesser than Deepika for equal screen time. Due to her character being central to the movie & movie name. Also shows like Family Man being bollywood (hindi language) productions had central characters like Samantha (who was probably very underutilized in the regional films she starred in before)
