The Wachsmuth Syndrome

Here's something I've been wanting to do for a while. In the September 1972 issue of Playboy, the magazine featured, essentially, a TG short story written by Stefan Heym. A lawyer wakes up one morning to find that he is now a she. He goes and sees his doctor who diagnoses him with an entirely novel condition known as The Wachsmuth Syndrome, where men wake up as women and the lawyer is just the beginning of a worldwide phenomenon. Despite appearing in Playboy, the story and its accompanying illustration were, I felt, fairly low on the eroticism factor. I was expecting a greater deal of description of female anatomy and maybe the newly-minted female lawyer trying out her new equipment.

The drawing for the story by Don Ivan Punchatz was decent but didn't overly impress me, so I thought I'd try out my version. I drew the hero of the story transforming in bed into a groovy 70's chick. If it's based in the 70's, you know there's gonna be a lot of bushy hair and sideburns going on! At the end of the reel, I included Punchatz' original illustration. Let me know your thoughts!

It's interesting you mention that, as I am currently working on something quite similar. :)

The most intriguing part of the story was his self-exploration at the beginning of the story. The tone of the rest of the story was a little melancholy.

I still have a yellowing copy of the Playboy story around here somewhere...
